This guitar and vocal work were originally set on the Robert Frost poem ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’, and was written for a lecture series at Boston University given by Lukas Foss entitled ‘Words on Music. Some years later I set out to publish the work and found that the estate of the late R. Frost frowned upon this particular practice and after a second failed attempt to get permission to publish the work, I decided to write my own verse for this composition (my first actually) and use a subject familiar to me, the story of Daedalus and Icarus Journey to freedom.After his arrival in Crete, Daedalus found that Minos would not let him leave. He subsequently obtained wax and feathers and fashioned wings for himself and his son Icarus. With these they succeeded in flying away, but Icarus, flying too near to the sun, melted his wings, fell into the sea near Crete, and drowned; Daedalus escaped to Italy only to fall into the hands of the local King Kokalos who drowned him in hot water. Ali Hanna #857172. Published by Ali Hanna (A0.1264319). I wrote this piece as an epilogue (pun definitely intended) to a traumatic religious event that took place in February 2023. I won't go into details so I don't risk triggering anyone, but let's just say it was a lot. This is also the first piece I've written where the text isn't my own because my composition professor at the time challenged me to do so.The text of the first half of the piece comes from Mark Twain's poem Warm Summer Sun. It's intended to be an acceptance of the fact that the singer isn't the same person they once were. As the poem repeats, the singer begins to say goodbye to their old self and lay them to rest.The text of the second half of the piece comes from Madison Julius Cawein's poem Take Heart. I see this part as someone in the singer's life giving them hope to keep on living, and who that entity is can be interpreted in a number of ways. For me, it was the friends and professors around me that helped me keep going. I didn't talk to many people about what happened, but just seeing everyone's faces every day taught me that if they can continue living their lives, then so can I.I ended up adding the clarinet part after a moment of inspiration during my trip to the ICA ClarinetFest 2023 in Denver, Colorado. Voice and clarinet are my two passions, so I thought I would use Epilogue to put them together. This piece has yet to be premiered in its current form, but I hope to someday. Labé was fluent in Latin and Italian, and a trained musician. She wrote twenty-four sonnets. TRANSLATION Sonnet VIII - I Live, I Die I live, I die, I burn with fire, I drown. It matters very little what I feel; All life is now too real, now too surreal; Joy comes and endless boredom weighs me down, And suddenly I laugh and then I cry; With grief and bliss I’m weeping for the past; Good feelings go away and yet they last, And suddenly I bleed and then I sigh. I thought about this a lot, and when we finally made the move I had decided what kind of person I really wanted to be. In fact, I felt bad for being the wrong kind of person and hurting other people physically and spiritually. I eventually felt so bad about my mistakes that I decided that I would write or call the people I had hurt and apologize to them. Over the period of a year I was able to find, call and apologize to each of them. To my great surprise none of them were still angry with me. I was forgiven. That was a great feeling. This day will be forever what you choose. Once you leave this life you won't be able to return and right any wrongs that you have committed. So when you make a mistake, choose to make it right today so that this day, this day of good choosing will be what will last forever. Never let yourself do something that you know inside is wrong. If your friends are trying to talk you into doing something you know is wrong, don't just sit there and listen to them. Get up and leave the room, or the party, or the situation. Be true. Be the one. Be the son or daughter of God. Do what He would do.
