For each song, there is a combined score with both parts on a grand staff plus a separate 1-staff score for each individual part. A note and chord reference chart is also provided for each song.This set of scores uses black and white noteheads and is best suited for musicians already familiar with reading standard music notation. For beginning musicians, this same set of scores is available (sold separately) with color coded noteheads.Several of these arrangements include two verses with a first easy verse followed by an intermediate second verse. For the songs with two verses, an optional ending is provided for the first verse or it can be skipped to perform the two verses together. Only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are easier to see (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. Lyrics and chord names are provided as well to aid in the learning and teaching of these songs. All Things Bright and Beautiful is a beloved hymn written by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895), an Anglo-Irish poet known for her hymns There is a Green Hill Far Away and Once in Royal David's City as well as her metrical paraphrase of St. Patrick's Breastplate (a prayer attributed to Patrick, patron saint of Ireland), known by its opening words, I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity. An exposition of the clause of the Apostles' Creed that describes God as maker of heaven and earth, All Things Bright and Beautiful was published in Alexander's Hymns for Little Children in 1848. It was later included in The English Hymnal (1906) with a tune composed by W.H. Monk in 1887.All Things Bright and Beautiful is also frequently sung to the hymn tune ROYAL OAK, adapted from a 17th-century English folk tune, The Twenty-Ninth of May and published in the collection of English country dances, The Dancing Master, in 1686. One of the “Great Four†Anglican hymns of the 19th century, Charles Wesley’s (1707-1788) “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing†first appeared in the 1739 collection, Hymns and Sacred Poems, by Wesley and his brother John (1703-1791) under the title “Hymn for Christmas-Day.â€Based on a verse from the Gospel of Luke (“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.†— 2:14), the hymn tells of an angelic host singing praises from Heaven above to Christ — the God incarnate, Savior and Redeemer of the world. George Whitefield, a fellow Anglican cleric and founder with the Wesley brothers of the evangelical movement known as Methodism, adapted the hymn and published it in his 1754 Collection of Hymns for Social Worship. Additional revisions were made by other editors, including the repetition of the opening lines, “Hark! the herald angels sing / glory to the new-born king†at the end of each stanza, as it is commonly sung today.Wesley envisioned his hymn being sung to the same tune as his “Christ the Lord is Risen Today†(published as “Hymn for Easter-Day†in Hymns and Sacred Poems). However, the tune MENDELSSOHN, an adaptation by English musician William H. Cummings (1831-1915) of music from Felix Mendelssohn’s 1840 secular cantata, Festgesang, is overwhelmingly associated with Wesley’s text today. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune known as Bunessan [1] (it shares this tune with the 19th century Christmas Carol Child in the Manger[2]). It is often sung in children's services and in Funeral services.[3] English pop musician and folk singer Cat Stevens included a version on his 1971 album Teaser and the Firecat. The song became identified with Stevens due to the popularity of this recording. It reached number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, number one on the U.S. easy listening chartin 1972,[4] and number four on the Canadian RPM Magazine charts. The hymn originally appeared in the second edition of Songs of Praise (published in 1931), to the tune Bunessan, composed in the Scottish Islands. In Songs of Praise Discussed, the editor, Percy Dearmer, explains that as there was need for a hymn to give thanks for each day, English poet and children's author Eleanor Farjeon had been asked to make a poem to fit the lovely Scottish tune. A slight variation on the original hymn, also written by Eleanor Farjeon, can be found in the form of a poem contributed to the anthology Children's Bells, under Farjeon's new title, A Morning Song (For the First Day of Spring), published by Oxford University Press in 1957. The song is noted in 9/4 time but with a 3/4 feel. Bunessan had been found in L. McBean's Songs and Hymns of the Gael, published in 1900.[5] Before Farjeon's words, the tune was used as a Christmas carol, which began Child in the manger, Infant of Mary, translated from the Scottish Gaelic lyrics written by Mary MacDonald. The English-language Roman Catholic hymnal also uses the tune for the James Quinn hymns, Christ Be Beside Me and This Day God Gives Me, both of which were adapted from the traditional Irish hymn St. Patrick's Breastplate. The First Noel (also written The First Noël and The First Nowell) is a traditional classical English Christmas carol, most likely from the early modern period, although possibly earlier.[2][3] Noel is an Early Modern English synonym of Christmas.[4]In its current form, it is of Cornish origin, and it was first published in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833), both of which were edited by William Sandys and arranged, edited and with extra lyrics written by Davies Gilbert for Hymns and Carols of God. Whether beginner or experienced musician, these scores can be used in numerous ways from solo playing to playing with a partner or as a group. A note and chord reference chart is included as well as a rhythm pattern chart. Descriptions, suggestions, and uses for each score and chart are detailed on the introduction page and summarized below:Melody ScoreThis score can be played as a solo with or without singing along. Those new to reading standard music notation as well as those already familiar with music notation will find the numbers above the staff helpful. These numbers correspond to the numbers on the Tongue Drum. Lyrics appear below the staff for sing along enjoyment. Harmony ScoreThis score can be used in conjunction with the Melody Score to form a duet by providing the accompaniment (harmony) while someone plays or sings the melody. Note numbers below the staff corresponding to the numbers on the drum. Chord names are shown above the staff for playing a rhythmic accompaniment in place of the harmony accompaniment shown. The chord names can also be used for ensemble playing with other instruments (such as a Ukulele or Guitar).Grand StaffThe Grand Staff score combines the Melody Score with the Harmony Score. This score provides a visual overview of how the two scores line up and is helpful for a director or teacher using this set of scores in a group setting. If playing with a partner (a duet), this score may be easier to use since you both can see what the other person is playing. This score includes note numbers above the melody staff and below the harmony staff corresponding to the numbers on the drum; chord names shown above the harmony staff for ensemble playing with other instruments or for using a rhythmic chord accompaniment; and lyrics between the staves for sing along enjoyment. Advanced Solo ScoreThe Advanced Solo score includes harmony notes along with the melody notes to create a fuller sounding solo which can be played with or without singing along. Numbers corresponding to the numbers on the Tongue Drum are included above the staff.Note and Chord ChartThis chart consists of two separate staff rows. The first staff shows the notes used for the melody. The second staff shows the notes in each chord used in this song. Any combination of the notes within a given chord can be played using one of the rhythm patterns. Rhythm ChartThis chart shows four rhythm patterns that can be used as an accompaniment for the melody.
