IncantationThe work is written between September and December 2008 for mezzo soprano Angelica Cathariou and the Greek Ensemble of Contemporary Music under Valery Oreshkin. It is based on an excerpt of an ancient greek funerary inscription of 4th century B.C. found at the Trofonius Oracle in Petilia, South Italy.Γης παις ειμί και ουÏανοÏ, αστεÏόεντος. Î‘Ï…Ï„Î¬Ï ÎµÎ¼Î¿Î¯ γÎνος ουÏάνιον, τόδε ίστε και αυτοί. Δίψηι δ’ειμί αÏη και απόλλυμαι, αλλά δότ’ αίψα ψυχÏόν ÏÎ´Ï‰Ï Ï€ÏοÏÏÎον της ΜνημοσÏνης από λίμνης.(I am a child of earth and starry sky. My origin is celestial, and you know it very well. I am burning thurst and I loose myself. But give me soon cool water, springs from Lake Mnemosyne.)The text, which is being set at the 2nd part of the work, is an invocation of the soul descending to Hades to the guardians of lake Mnemosyne, to allow keeping its memory alive to the next life. Privilege, under tradition, of the initiate souls, counter to that of lake Lethe which led them to eternal oblivion.The two parts of the composition are the equivalent to the watery - metaphysical element of the two lakes - rivers running across Hades. The work is dedicated to the memory of composer's father Ioannis Theodossiou (1917 - 2008) and has been performed by Angelica Kathariou and the Greek Ensemble of Contemporary Music under Valery Oreshkin at Ph. Nakas Concert Hall, Athens, in 2009.

Deux Caracteres 2. Dialogues 3. Dance de Confusion Confluence is the name of a place in Lyon where 2 rivers flow together: The Saône flows into the - at least in German - female Rhone. In French, however, it flows into DEN Rhone - Le Rhône. This confuses the composer: How do rivers get their gender, are they sometimes male, sometimes female? Is it because of their character, because of the landscape that they flow through? By their water, even by their fish? On the people on their shores? A real confusion ensues. In the subsequent thoughts about music, the composer discovers certain analogies and asks himself the question: does gender-typical music actually exist? Or instruments? Typically male harmonies or rhythms? Or clearly female melodies and the way to interpret? The 3-movement composition is dedicated to this question and meanders like a dance in the bed of the converging streams. Colorful modal harmonies form the bed for wide arcs of melody. A varied, recurring theme sets the direction and creates a bubbling, dancing pull in the direction of the mouth: dancing finale! 1st movement: Deux Characters In the first movement (Andante) the roles are distributed - the Sâone and the Rhône get their performers. A first glance at the ensemble reveals a tendency: woodwinds take on the female lead, the male brass the counterpart. The two drummers each support one of the two poles in solidarity. The assignment may be obvious, but strong doubts remain in the final chord of the first movement. 2. Dialogues: In smaller and larger dialogues, there is a lively exchange and the properties are worked out and further developed. But it is also increasingly being copied and imitated, even maliciously agitated and aped. You try to convince each other, interrupt each other, both sides increasingly flare up, it gets louder and more hectic, louder and louder, too loud, until communication stops: in the end, you just yell at each other! 3. Dance de Confusion The resulting confusion finds a conciliatory end in the third movement of the composition: Let's dance! Rush Time was composed for two pianos in 2001 after a commission by the Rivers School in Music in Massachusetts, U.S.A. An exciting and friendly for performers and audiences work by Apostolos Paraskevas. Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The latter feature has also led Paraskevas to the creation of films, notably the acclaimed I Finally Did It (Gold award, California Film Awards 2010), dealing wittily with Death, a recurring extra-musical theme in his music. River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not.
