DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER (Original version) With this edition, the original version of Wagner’s opera Der fliegende Holländer [The flying Dutchman] WWV 63 is made available to the public for the first time in piano score form. The score on which the edition is based was published in the Richard Wagner-Complete Edition 1983: Richard Wagner. Collected works Vol. 4, I-II, The Flying Dutchman. Romantic opera in three acts (original version 1841), edited by Isolde Vetter (Schott Music International, Mainz, RWA 104-10/RWA 104-20).†(Egon Voss, quoted from the foreword of the new Der fliegende Holländer vocal score) Original version and 1842-1880 version The original version of Der fliegende Holländer dates from 1841. Wagner, at the time a completely unknown Kapellmeister in France, trying to get a foothold in Paris, saw the opportunity for a stage work that would meet the fashion at the Paris Opera of performing several short works one after another. Der fliegende Holländer, conceived in 1840 and composed in 1841, seemed to him suited to the purpose. In 1841, even when Wagner no longer counted on a success in Paris, he still held to the conception of a one-act opera and offered the work to German opera houses under the title of “Romantic Opera in One Act and Three Scenesâ€. This version is set in Scotland, taking as the literary model for the opera Heinrich Heine’s novel fragment “From the Memoirs of Mr. Schnabelewopskiâ€, and the protagonists have English names. This version was never performed in Wagner’s lifetime. Beginning in 1842, the work went through a tale of constant revision: Even before the Dresden premiere (2nd January 1843) Wagner undertook fundamental alterations. He transposed the location from Scotland to Norway, changed character’s names as appropriate, divided the opera into three acts – not least due to considerations of scene changes – and transposed Senta’s Ballad from A minor to G minor. It was in this version that the score of the opera went to print in 1845. For a performance in 1860 he composed the later so-called ‘Tristan’ or ‘Redemption’ ending to the Overture. Until the very end of his life, Wagner contemplated a plan for a final score or a definitive vocal score: it never came to be, so that to this day, as with Tannhäuser, we still do not have Der fliegende Holländer in a final version. Based on the research conducted in the creation of the Complete Edition, our editions contain, in one case the original version of 1841, while the other essentially goes back to the first printing of the score of 1845, but with the addition of the source material for the retouchings dating from 1842 to 1889. VOCAL SCORES The original version of the opera was made available for the first time in a vocal score in 2005 (ED 8065). Published by Connie Boss (A0.1515104). Everyone knows how special the star was for the birth of Jesus. The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star. The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see. This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an SA duet with SSAA choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir. I hope you enjoy singing and listening to this cantata—Connie BossI didn't have a minimum copy, so you can make copies of this. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include This Is My Father's World, I Love to Tell the Story, and Faith of Our Fathers. This collection of arrangements is also available for SATB voices and piano or piano solo.

As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include He Leadeth Me, Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us, and O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee. This book provides its user with a series of notes on a treble staff with no rhythm values and no meter. Chapters are organized by the placement of the notes relative to the staff; on the staff, above the staff, below the staff, on and above the staff, and on and below the staff. For each pitch range there is one chapter with no accidentals and one chapter with accidentals. All exercises have a space at the beginning of each staff to write in a key signature, allowing each exercise to be read in all keys and used in many ways. The aim with this book is to allow the user to focus specifically on exercises centred around pitch without the distraction of rhythmic values or time signatures. This can begin with the practice of sight-reading but can expand to include many other learning goals. The diatonic sets contain notes with no accidentals or key signature. These collections can be read as written, using only natural notes, or in any of the 15 key signatures from 7 flats to 7 sharps. Chromatic collections include sharp and flat notes as well as natural ones. The later exercises in these chapters increase the difficulty by including B#, Cb, E#, and Fb. Ledger line chapters start with the first ledger line and gradually expand away from the staff. Exercises above the staff reach up to the space above the fifth ledger line while exercises below reach down to the space below the third. The random nature of the notes in these exercises is intentional; it forces the user to pay attention to each note and makes the exercises very difficult to memorize, ensuring that they will still present a challenge even after multiple readings. It’s important when sight-reading to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a single exercise for a long time. This will ensure that you’re strengthening your ability to read the notes rather than just memorizing the exercises. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Gain comfort reading the notes and finding them on your instrument in no particular rhythm or tempo. A greater challenge can be achieved by playing them at a steady tempo or by playing them in a simple rhythmic pattern. Beginner students can begin by writing in the note names. Play each exercise in all 15 key signatures. Advanced theory students and improvising musicians can also use these exercises to practice identifying scale degrees in various keys or playing chords built on every scale degree in the chosen key. Develop comfort with chords by playing a chord built on each note in the exercise. For example: for each note in the exercise, play the major chord with that root. Increase the difficulty with different chord qualities or different chord tones, for example: for every note, play the minor 7th chord in which the given note is the 3rd. Practice transposing into different keys. This is an especially useful challenge for people who play transposing instruments such as brass and woodwind instruments. Chapters with wide ranges can present a great exercise for musicians who play instruments where large leaps are a challenge. People who play strings, mallet percussion, piano, woodwinds, and brass would be among those who would benefit from practising these awkward leaps and falls. As with any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particular collection are limited only by the imagination of the musician using it. I highly encourage anybody using this book to find as many uses for it as possible. My hope is that as you grow as a musician you will find ever more creative and challenging ways to use these materials so that you can return to these books for years.

We were in the midst of a vast economic crisis leaving millions in poverty, racism had once again found its foothold in the foreground of US culture, climate change had decimated the west coast in flames while southern coastal cities were being bombarded with floods from storms. We have also been forced to see the ugliness of domestic terrorists establishing themselves in the hopes of hurting their fellow citizens. However, these issues pale in comparison to the utter devastation we have faced from COVID-19. As I write this note, we are just shy of nearly a quarter of a million people having senselessly died from COVID-19. The utter failure we’ve had in leadership and lack of empathy from our fellow citizens have caused countless families to now have empty seats at their table. There was no need for this. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children have died from means that could have been completely preventable. When I was asked to write this piece, I wanted to come up with a simple concept as an elegy to those lost to the virus. A simple question arose; What will we say? 50 years from now, how will we answer to those younger generations while we collectively sat by and did nothing to help each other? How are we going to excuse letting the rot that has sunk in go unpunished? How do we defend the indefensible? This question haunts me. The music you will hear channels my answer to that question. There is no true resolution. There is no happy ending. When we have finally moved on past this pandemic, we are still left in the wake of hundreds of thousands of dead citizens. One day it will hit us all how many lives we really lost. So I ask this; while you listen, reflect on every individual who suffered at the hands that did not act. Allow yourself to absorb the true gravity of what we have experienced. Give those victims a few minutes of your time. When the time comes for you to be asked, what will you say?

Italian.My collection of laude has its origins in the world of early music, being based in spirit and feeling on the unaccompanied vocal “laude†found in a collection from 13th century Cortona. The people who originally sang such things - the ‘laudesi’ - banded together in confraternities but were not usually associated with any particular church and this music was not part of any liturgy. The first laude that I wrote were, like the mediaeval originals, for unaccompanied voice - for the soprano Anna Maria Friman. I then wrote some for two voices, adding the tenor John Potter, and some for three sopranos, the Trio Mediaeval. Gradually I added more for other vocal combinations as well as some with instrumental accompaniment. But I do return from time to time to the ‘purer’ solo or duo lauda. In 2006 I wrote a number of pieces for the Estonian National Men’s Choir (RAM) chiefly through my friendship and collaborations with its conductor Kaspars Putnins who, as well as conducting the Latvian Radio Choir, was director of RAM. I wrote two laude for them. Lauda 31 was completely new, while Lauda 32 is a new version of Lauda 19 “Omne homoâ€. Both make full use of the special quality of the Estonian choir and Lauda 32 in particular deliberately aims to have the sound of singers in a Russian Orthodox tradition.Whatever vocal approach I use for setting lauda texts, I treat them with great respect in relation to the original lauda. I adhere as far as possible to the same number of notes to a syllable that are in the mediaeval versions, frequently following the melodic contours and sometimes quoting individual phrases. The song appears on Crosby, Stills & Nash's critically acclaimed debut album. The song is notable for its serene yet pointed melody and its unique lyrics, which compare Queen Guinevere to the object of the singer's affection, referred to as mi'lady. In a Rolling Stone interview, Crosby remarked: That is a very unusual song, it's in a very strange tuning (EBDGAD) with strange time signatures. I have arranged the song in standard tuning as re-tuning your guitar can be very time consuming. In order to do this successfully I have made some changes to the original accompaniment, nothing drastic and the feel of the guitar part is still the same. This the vocal arrangement, there is also an instrumental trio arrangement. The vocal part is tricky because of the rhythm while the accompanying guitar is challenging not only for the unusual time signatures but also a complex left hand at times requiring long stretches. The song has three verses all of which are sung slightly differently from each other therefore the vocal part has no repeats while the guitar part does. I have given the lyrics here as well as in the song as the meaning is important and not obvious at first glance.

While most of us no longer live within earshot of bells, many will find a catchy and simple melody still wakes us up in the morning, reminds us to go to that meeting we forgot about, or even just helps us to do day-to-day tasks. As an avid alarm-user myself, I find music assisting me with punctuality just as it has for my ancestors. I wanted to create a piece commemorating this bond between music and time, inspired by both traditional carillon melodies, as well as modern day ringtones. My piece Musical Clock contains movements for both beginners and intermediate players. Each movement may be played individually, but any two or more movements should be played sequentially. ~Adam Lenhart, 2024This composition was first premiered by carillonist Adam Lenhart at the 53 bell Charles Baird Carillon in Ann Arbor, Michigan.------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Associations Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Mens Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Lift Every Voice and Sing was initially written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900 and set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson in 1905 and has become known a national anthem for African-Americans. The initial hymn tune is intense with grandeur and immense hope. With this arrangement; I have set the music more somberly to reflect the seriousness of the text that speaks of the bitterness and anguish of America’s dark racial past that is still rampant today. This allows the listener to reflect on the text thoughtfully. Remarkably, I have heard this hymn many times throughout my lifetime both in predominantly Caucasian denominations and predominantly African-African American denominations and the differences in interpretation are fascinating. White congregations tend to sing this hymn spritely with great pomp and circumstance while the Black congregations tend to sing it more labored and meditative as if it were a dirge. I believe both interpretations are valid, but interesting given its context. This arrangement is written for medium-high voice, cello obbligato and piano accompaniment.

Nature Morte | by William Brenner (Still life) For quartet: Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, Viola and Xylophone This is my final project for my 2nd semester in college. I hope you enjoy it! The piece explores complex musical writing and technical elements. My goal was to explore this kind of composition while following my typical way of writing music: expressing a story or an image through music. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Program note: Many times throughout history, cycles and elements of nature like birth, death and, of course, love have been extremely rich sources of inspiration for composers. However, even though it has been the main subject of many musical works in the past, it is still pretty rare for nature to be represented as a cycle used when describing humankind. Therefore, the goal of the piece Nature Morte is to not only show the cycle of life present in nature, but also address the cohabitation of death and life within this same cycle. Paintings by Jan Wijnants like Le repos des chasseurs aux faucons et Paysage avec bovins sur une route de campagne wonderfully illustrates this phenomena. This dutch painter often uses dead trees and big tree stumps in his work, which symbolizes typical fields and landscapes from the 17th century. This demonstration of coexistence between life and death, as well as this idea of cycles within life in nature, are the main sources of inspiration for this piece. Given that the idea of life and death within nature is inspired by motionless elements in visual art, it explains the chosen title: Nature morte (which could translate as “Still lifeâ€).
