Will Corbin #1038314. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459369). Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych wrote this carol, now heard in shopping malls everywhere, in 1914. He based it on an old Ukrainian folk song. It started out in pre-Christian Ukraine as a song to celebrate the new year, which started then with spring in April. With Christianity and the Julian calendar, the new year moved to January, and then its original lyricist -- the song was written for a choir -- added stuff about bells and carols, and it migrated a few days earlier to become a Christmas standard.This arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC and tuba. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459445). Ding Dong was composed as a French dance tune in the 16th century. A 19th century Englishman added lyrics that made it a Christmas tune. It was first published as part of a book of carols in 1924. From Wikipedia: The song is particularly noted for the Latin refrain: Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! (Glory! Hosanna in the highest!), where the sung vowel sound o of Gloria is fluidly sustained through a lengthy rising and falling melismatic melodic sequence, extending the word to a 33-syllable-long lyric. Luckily, since this is purely an instrumental, you don't have to sweat the meaning of melismatic melodic sequence.This arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC and tuba. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1462720). This is a little ditty that was played aboard the sailing ships of His (or Her) Majesty's Navy by an onboard fiddler or piper. And to it the sailors would dance, in part for the exercise on a long voyage. Samuel Pepys called it The Jig of the Ship. Presumably, a shipboard piper would play it at a comfortable, even slow, tempo, but it's typically performed at breakneck speed. Or you can start slow and accelerate to stupid. I put this arrangement together for our quintet to play at a U.S. Navy ship reunion. It's moderately brisk, right at the lunatic fringe of our capabilities. It's for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC (a trombone would be near impossible) and tuba, and no one escapes unscathed. It has since been covered more than 2,000 times; it holds the Guinness record for history's most recorded song. It topped charts around the world when it hit the record stores. Here's a snippet from Wikipedia to give you an idea of how revered it is: 'Yesterday' was voted the best song of the 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners and was also voted the No. 1 pop song of all time by MTV and Rolling Stone magazine the following year. In 1997, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Broadcast Music Incorporated asserts that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century. I've strayed from strict notation rules to avoid a confusing storm of eight rests and tied notes; much of this 12/8 tune is constructed essentially as quater note triplets against a four-beat backdrop.

Frenchman Charles Borel-Clerc wrote it originally in 1905 as a French cafe song, La Mattchiche, based on the Brazilian dance maxixa, predecessor to the samba, and in his subtitle he described it as a march based on Spanish themes. He repurposed it as a tune for a Spanish zarzuela (a little like an American musical play) and retitled it La Sorella, Italian for the sister. John Philip Sousa heard it when his band was on a European tour and recast it as a military-style American march. And this arrangement treats it as a tango, very Argentine. The song was passed over for both the White Album and Abbey Road, so, after the Beatles broke up, McCartney included it on his self-titled first solo album. That record also included a singalong version of Junk, which is approximately what this would be.This is more elevator music, definitely useful for when the band is not necessarily the center of attention.It's scored for baritone instead of trombone. (For that reason, most Austrians are merely mildly aggravated by what is otherwise a lovely tune.) The tiny edelweiss (it means noble white) flower is indeed a prominent symbol of Austria, present on many things Austrian you would find in any souvenir store across the country. Edelweiss was a late addition to the Sound Of Music score; Richard Rodgers thought Capt. Von Trapp needed a song to sing to his country as he fled the Nazis. It was also the last song of the Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration before Hammerstein died. This arrangement features an echoic yodeling at beginning and end. Its original name was La Cachuata, which means peanut in the ancient Mexican Nahuatl language. It started out as a composition by a Czech composer, got new lyrics and new names in many languages (in Germany, where the Germans claim it as their own, it's called Rosamunde) and became wildly popular across the globe during World War II, after the Andrews Sisters made a hit of it in 1939.This one is scored for two trumpet, horn, tuba and baritone, a more fitting instrument for an Oktoberfest band than a trombone. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1462698). If you've heard only one tango in your whole life, this is quite likely the one, written by Argentinian (but French born) Carlos Gardel in 1935. You know, a beautiful woman slithers across the dance floor to wrap herself around her partner, and passion ensues. The name means by a head, referring to a winning horse-racing margin; the songs lyric tells the story of a gambler who compares that compuslion with his attraction to women. You might remember it from Scent Of A Woman or True Lies. It has appeared on a vast number of movie soundtracks.
