The Nettleton Prelude is based on the Nettleton hymn tune, and was written for use as a prelude on a festival Sunday. It features a bold, recurring fanfare, flashy accompaniment parts in the trumpets (yes, the trumpets have to take their turn at NOT playing the melody :) ), an opportunity for every instrument to get the melody, and lots of really choice suspensions that give the piece a bit of a neo-Baroque feel. It is of moderate difficulty because of the running parts in the trumpets and the fact that the tuba covers a fairly wide range. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792085). Fantasy and Fugue in D minor BWV 905 is one of Bach's least known works originally written for keyboard. The Fantasy is of moderate tempo and relatively short. The top two lines have many suspensions while the bottom line (optionally performed on Tuba) is scalelike. The Fugue is more lengthy with the top lines trading off short repeated passages while the bass line winds around alternating scales and octave jumps. Mr. Sauer's excellent arrangement is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 6 minutes in length.

Published by Lori Archer Sutherland (A0.1071177). The Monk’s Turned Topsy-Turvy is an original fantasy for clarinet choir, based on the old French-Canadian children’s song, Ah! Si mon moine voulait danser! (Danse, mon moine, danse). The title is a play on words: moine means both monk and spinning top in French. The lyrics speak of persuading mon moine to dance by offering various articles of clothing, such as a hood or cap.After a brief, yet bold, introduction, the piece jumps into a straightforward rendition of the tune. From there, the melody is repeated, bringing in other voices and added flourishes. While the tune starts to repeat a third time, it doesn’t get to finish its full statement. It’s interrupted by a run up through the ensemble into a rollicking 7/8 section.With a rhythmic accompaniment underneath, the jaunty melody begins in the third clarinets. The upper instruments take over briefly in 6/8, then the tune returns to 7/8. After a quick breather, the accompaniment introduces an upward sweep motif. This alternates with the accompaniment pattern heard at the beginning of the 7/8 section.The lower voices then take control, driving downward into a different tonality and mood. An undulating accompaniment sets a dreamlike feel, with different voices quoting fragments of the theme. The accompaniment transfers between voices throughout the section, eventually changing back into a 3/4, then a 2/4 feel, resulting in a transition back to the original feel of the piece.The low voices get the melody, with rhythmic accompaniment and racing runs throughout the other sections. The melody goes a bit topsy-turvy before the group comes together in the descending quarter note motif from the beginning of the piece, bringing us to the coda. There’s one final quote of the opening of the main theme from the low voices, leading to a whirlwind in the first and Eb with accented notes and suspensions underneath. The Eb pipes up with one last comment and the group closes out the piece.

With a fairly wide range, and lots of independence, all four parts are of similar difficulty (and are all in treble clef), and each player has the opportunity to show off a little as the piece plays out. The opening movement is in a style similar to a french overture, with a majestic opening followed by an allegro contrapuntal section. The second movement is slow, with cascading movement and chains of suspensions in a haunting minor, then the final Allegro brings the piece to a rousing conclusion. Within the abilities of good high school players, but interesting and challenging enough for college and professional quartets.

The inspirational standard Let There Be Peace On Earth is presented here in a tender arrangement for unaccompanied Trombone quartet. It begins with an unaccompanied solo for the first eight measures, then the additional voices enter, expanding from that unison into a broader harmonic texture that employs a fair amount of suspensions and tension/release throughout. The register of the 1st trombone part is not very forgiving, but will reward players with a lyrical high range, so this part is provided in both bass and tenor clef to best suit your players’ reading desires. Alternatively, a Bb Flugelhorn part is included that could turn this into a mixed brass ensemble without as significant of a range requirement. The 2nd and 3rd parts shouldn’t pose nearly so much of a range challenge but still briefly ascend to Ab and F# respectively. This hopeful and introspective piece will make a fine addition as an inspirational ballad on your quartet program!
