It’s Been a Long Long Time is arranged as a duet for two Cellos.It’s Been a Long Long Time is best known to modern audiences as the song at the end Avengers: Endgame, where Steve Rogers, after seventy years, finally gets to dance with Peggy Carter. The song of course, is much older. Two versions of It’s Been a Long Long Time topped the charts in late 1945, and as US servicemen returned from Europe and the Pacific, it perfectly caught the mood of the times. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals. It is the latter version that is heard in Endgame and the one that forms the basis of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate standard will find It’s Been a Long Long Time ideal for formal and informal concert performances. with both parts enjoying plenty of melodic interest. His life was a constant struggle with adversity, and Joplin died relatively young in 1917, at the dawn of the recording age. Nowadays Scott Joplin has taken his rightful place in the gallery of great American composers. David McKeown #4355089. Published by David McKeown (A0.587537). The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. This full version is arranged as a duet for two Cellos and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The complete performance on youtube and the short audio sample are from the Clarinet Duet version of this arrangement. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with strict time, full tone and dynamics. Born in Lvov, and after a short period in the Russian army, Kandel emigrated to the USA in 1905 and quickly found work as a clarinettist in vaudeville, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and JP Sousa’s band. A brief but productive period as band-leader and recording artist followed, after which Kandel retired from performing to run a music shop.Kandel’s Hora is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. A slow Hora in triple meter is followed by a faster Freylach version of the same melody in 4. Kandel’s Hora is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. There is a timbral cannon toward the end where second cello strictly follows the first cello's gesture. It is then dissolved to an improvisatory coda to once again reveal the very theme La-Sol.

Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films. This version for Cello Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only. The Cakewalk was popular in the early twentieth century but its origins go back to slave plantations in the nineteenth century where dancers would often compete for a prize of cake. Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. The songs are most often about love and loss and Grá aims to capture this melancholy mood.Grá is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Players can add their own appropriate ornaments and variations to the melody if they wish. Grá has a performance time of a little over three minutes. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite. This full version is arranged as a duet for two Cellos and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored.
