Song of the Jet, translated literally as Airplane Samba) is a Brazilian song composed in 1962 by Antônio Carlos Jobim, who also wrote the original Portuguese lyrics. The English-language lyrics are by Gene Lees.In the biography Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Illuminated Man, Helena Jobim describes how her brother came up with the idea for the song: Tom's many walks from Ipanema to Santos Dumont Airport yielded that ode of beauty... He would head towards the airport, following the water's edge around Guanabara's Bay. The pretext to go there was to buy foreign magazines and newspapers. From Santos Dumont Airport he could observe his passion, the airplane. Yet he still kept some distance from those machines. He was afraid of flying, but he loved their power, splendor, and aerodynamics-man's conquest over machine.In the song, Jobim writes about landing at Galeão in Rio de Janeiro. The airport was renamed in his honor in 1999 and is now called Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport.Jobim wrote Samba do Avião for an Italian film, Copacabana Palace (1962), where it was performed by Jula De Palma and I 4 + 4 di Nora Orlandi. The movie was filmed in Rio and features cameo appearances by Jobim, João Gilberto and Os Cariocas.The first performance of the song was by Jobim and Os Cariocas in August 1962 at the Au Bon Gourmet restaurant in Copacabana, Rio, at what music historian Ruy Castro calls the bossa nova show to end all bossa nova shows, as it featured Jobim, João Gilberto, VinÃcius de Moraes and Os Cariocas on stage together for the only time.The first recording of the song was released in October 1962 by Elza Laranjeira. During my undergraduate career at The University of Akron, like many college students, I went through a year of trying to discover what I really wanted to do. In my sophomore year, I dropped from Music Education, and picked up a double major in Trumpet Performance and Composition with a minor in Jazz Studies. After 2 semesters of taking nearly 30 credit hours and a need to change my embouchure, I decided to focus on trumpet and come back to composition later. After finishing my BM in Trumpet Performance, I decided to go for a MM in Composition. This piece was one that I wrote for entry into the graduate program. To this day, it is still one of my favorite compositions! It's a lot of fun, very difficult and taxing, but also very musically interesting. It melds together several interesting melodic lines and motifs, and each player gets a chance to shine. There are also a lot of great ensemble moments where lines get passed through the entire quintet and turn it into one instrument. Grainger writes the following: The Immovable Do (composed 1933-1939) draws its title from one of the two kinds of Tonic Sol-fa notation, one with a movable Do (Do corresponding to the key-note of whatever key the music is couched in, from moment to moment; so that the note designated by Do varies with modulation) and the other with an immovable Do (in which Do always stands for C). In my composition-which is not based on any folksong or popular tune-the immovable Do is a high drone on C which is sounded throughout the whole piece. Released as a single on 7 September 1968, it was their second number-one single on the UK Singles Chart and their first US Top 10 hit.The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover, though the lyrics do not explicitly allude to the identity of the victim. Robin said, This is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There's a certain urgency about it. Myself and Barry wrote it. It's a bit like writing a script. Sometimes you can sit there for three hours with your guitar and nothing will happen. Then in the last ten minutes something will spark. The song was written with Percy Sledge in mind to record it. Sledge did record it in February 1970 but Atlantic did not issue his version in the United States at the time.Barry recalled, In those days, the lyrics were almost pretty well done on the spot. I don't remember the fundamentals on how the lyrics were formed, except that we were writing about a guy on death row. That was it.Robin adds:It was like acting, you see, we said, let's pretend that somebody, his life is on the line, somebody's going to the chair. What would be going through their mind? Let's not make it doom and gloom but sort of an appeal to the person he loves. Because right now that's all he cares about. Regardless of whether he's done a bad thing, he is a human being, and he's sending out this last message. There's someone out there whom he loves. It's a torch song, but within a very sort of theatrical sense. Not sort of abstract, but definitely somebody in a very bad situation whose life is going to end. What would they be saying, you know? Score and parts. 18 pages. Austin Ralphson #5801505. Published by Austin Ralphson (A0.563990). Satie wrote a set of three Gnossiennes for the piano right at the end of the 19th Century. Always one to challenge convention, he invented the word 'Gnossienne' especially for theses pieces - it has no other meaning. He also decided to notate the pieces without key signatures, time signatures or even bar lines and I have decided to do the same here in this arrangement. The piece gradually unfolds in a kind of trance-like hypnotic ambiance; this arrangement features the melody in all parts, starting unusually in the bass.

It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.O Christmas Tree is a German Christmas song based on a traditional folk song which was unrelated to Christmas. The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the course of the 19th century, and the song came to be seen as a Christmas carol. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by the Leipzig organist, teacher and composer, Ernst Anschutz. A tannenbaum is a fir tree. The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps. I think that students will enjoy this imitative section in the song. In addition to this version for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, there are also other arrangements of O Christmas Tree available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. The single doesn't give it justice. This arrangement includes all the solos and the ending that Tina uses in her live shows.
