Tchaikovsky's Festival Coronation March was commissioned by the City of Moscow in 1883 for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III and was first performed on June 4 of that year. The work contains two quotes from God Save the Tsar, which were edited out during performances throughout the Communist Soviet era, but are now back in place in order for the low brass section to shine :) Steven Gamble's excellent arrangement of this 5 1/2 minute work for 11-part Brass Ensemble, Timpani & Percussion is appropriate for advanced players. Instrumentation is for 3 Trumpets (E-flat & 2 B-flat) 4 Horns, 3 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani & Percussion.

The counterpoint and melodic solos of the first section contrast the lively meter changes and homorhythmic texture of the second section. The work as inspired by and derives its title from the 17th-century French carol Un flambeau. An alternative scoring for full orchestral brass (4.3.3.1) is available. Suitable for concert openers, worship services, and festivals.The score and parts in this edition are arranged to be printed double-sided, with correct page turns. Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing. Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. I have arranged this for Brass quintet, with the bass and tenor parts occasionally being tacet. The original is only for 4 voices, so it took a little bit of real arranging to get it to work properly on quintet. Perfectly usable in a liturgical setting and equally at home on the concert stage. This is brand new and fresh. Andrea Gabrieli was, of course, the uncle of Giovanni Gabrieli and between them they made a huge change to the way music was viewed in the liturgy as well as at festivals and celebrations.

This marvelous arrangement of Peter Tchaikovsky's Coronation March, sometimes called Festival March or Festival Coronation March, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and other festive occasions. This arrangement keeps all of the intensity and excitement of the original composition and is suitable for high school and college students. Professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (15 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available to the public for the first time. The Coronation March was ordered by the city of Moscow for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1883. It was written during March of 1883 and was performed for the first time on June 4, 1883 in Sokolniky Park in Moscow, conducted by Sergei Taneyev. The music then included excerpts of the anthem, God Save the Tsar. The American premiere was on May 5, 1891, for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City, conducted by Tchaikovsky himself. During the Soviet Era, Russian performances and recordings of the music were revised to omit the excerpts from the Czarist national anthem, replacing it with thematic material used earlier in the march, due to an official Soviet ban on the anthem. Starting with Dmitri Medvedev's inauguration in 2008, an abbreviated version of this piece is played during the Russian presidential inauguration accompanying the entrance of the incoming president, and ends well before the playing in this piece of the Tsarist anthem God Save the Tsar. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, the Coronation March does not have an opus number. It has been given alternative catalogue designations TH 50 and CW 47. Tchaikovsky's Coronation March was originally scored for a full orchestra and written in the key of D Major. Regis Bookshar has now created an abbreviated version, written in Db Major, and has arranged it for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 3 Bb Trumpets, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba. It is a descriptive exciting piece, and the intention was to make it a dramatic and mysterious in style- with a film -like storyline flowing through it. It has a calm intro going into a heavily syncopated driving 4 as the main theme punctuated by a heavy accented ostinato figure to add tension.The middle section is calmer and more relaxed where elements of the 1st theme appear in fragmented form. The intro returns once again before returning to the main theme which has slight modifications-extra accents etc, and the piece ends with the recurring stabs heard earlier before flourishing out. The ranges are between one and a half octaves and 2 octaves depending on the part. Set at intermediate level but the full score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.Price is for the full score and set of parts. 4 Mins 35 in length. Ideal as a showpiece, contest/festival, concert etc or an additional piece for the repertoire.
