Sally in Our Alley is a 1931 British romantic comedy drama film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Gracie Fields, Ian Hunter, and Florence Desmond.A British soldier (Ian Hunter) goes off to fight in World War I, with his girlfriend (Gracie Fields) waiting and worried at home. He is soon wounded in battle and crippled. He comes to the conclusion that she would be better off believing that he has been killed so she can get on with her life. She gets the news and is devastated. Several years later she is still grieving for him, but he has now been cured and goes looking for her. The film incorporated Fields' hugely popular signature song, Sally, itself a reference to Henry Carey's 1725 song, Sally in Our Alley, which had long been a traditional English country dance.Here's a rendition of Sally in our Alley for Brass Quintet. Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod†variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Brass Quintet has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

Here, the music is arranged for Brass Quartet, directly from the orchestral score. Elgar wrote fourteen variations on a theme, each one depicting close friends and family. Nimrod represents his publisher and friend Augustus Jaeger. The biblical character of Nimrod is described as a mighty hunter, and jaeger means hunter in German.The single pdf file contains the full score plus individual parts for two Trumpets, Trombone and Tuba. There are also alternative parts for F and Eb Horns included. The linked youtube performance is the Clarinet version of this Quartet.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. All parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and lyrical legato playing. Cavatina is a 1970 classical guitar piece by British composer Stanley Myers written for the film The Walking Stick (1970), and popularised as the theme from The Deer Hunter some eight years later. As the Italian diminutive of cavata, cavatina is a musical term frequently applied to any simple, melodious air.The piece had been recorded by classical guitarist John Williams, long before the film that made it famous. Cleo Laine wrote lyrics and recorded the song as He Was Beautiful, accompanied by Williams. It has been recorded since by many guitarists, such as Leona Boyd, Angel Romero, Norbert Kraft.Derek Broadbent's arrangements caught my soul when I was playing the flügelhorn solo in a brass band, so I decided to transcribe it for a brass quintet, having less players around but still being able to celebrate this wonderful composition and arrangement.
