Scheherazade is the young bride of the Sultan. After one of his wives cheats on him, he decides to take a new wife every day and have her executed the next morning. But it all stops with Scheherazade. She marries the Sultan in order to save all future young women from this fate. She tells the Sultan fascinating stories, leaving him in such suspense each night that he can't execute her the next morning for fear of not hearing the end of the story. After 1,001 of these well-told tales, the Sultan relents.

This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. Tu dormi? means Are you sleeping The next phrase Oh cruel heart gives the clue that we are listening to our young man's unrequited feelings again! It appears he has had his wicked way once already but now she is sleeping. This is the first song for a quartet of Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

The Christmas Oratorio (German: Weihnachts-Oratorium), BWV 248, is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734 and incorporates music from earlier compositions, including three secular cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 and a largely lost church cantata, BWV 248a. The date is confirmed in Bach's autograph manuscript. The next performance was not until 17 December 1857 by the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin under Eduard Grell. The Christmas Oratorio is a particularly sophisticated example of parody music. The author of the text is unknown, although a likely collaborator was Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander).The work belongs to a group of three oratorios written in 1734 and 1735 for major feasts, the other two works being the Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11) and the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249). All three of these oratorios to some degree parody earlier compositions. The Christmas Oratorio is by far the longest and most complex work of the three.The Christmas Oratorio is in six parts, each part being intended for performance on one of the major feast days of the Christmas period. The piece is often presented as a whole or split into two equal parts. The total running time for the entire work is nearly three hours.The first part (for Christmas Day) describes the Birth of Jesus, the second (for December 26) the annunciation to the shepherds, the third (for December 27) the adoration of the shepherds, the fourth (for New Year's Day) the circumcision and naming of Jesus, the fifth (for the first Sunday after New Year) the journey of the Magi, and the sixth (for Epiphany) the adoration of the Magi.

Translated from French, it means Dance of the Little Swans, also known as Dance of the cygnets. It is very challenging because all dancers must look the same.Ivanov's choreography—created for the famous revival of Swan Lake in 1895—was meant to imitate the way cygnets huddle and move together for protection. Four dancers enter the stage in a line and move across with their arms crossed in front of one another, grasping the next dancer's hand. They move sideways, doing sixteen pas de chat. Ideally the dancers move in exact or near-exact unison. The song is a certain crowd pleaser perfect for getting the audience on their feet and clapping along. The rhythm of the arrangement is a funky caribe beat known as a bamboula. A bamboula was a primitive drum that made its way to New Orleans via Haiti during the 18th century. Enslaved people would gather in Congo Square, next to the French Quarter and dance to the rhythm of the bamboula. The dances also became known as a bamboula. The infectious beat made its way into the music of the early New Orleans Jazz Bands. Even today, if you visit Congo Square in New Orleans, you often find groups of musicians and dancers enjoying the beat of the bamboula!

Big Sky March is dedicated to the Big Sky Conference and the fun times they enable us highly energetic college students to have at sporting events (and afterwards). The overall sequence of this brass quintet models a typical college party in eagle country, where our grit and love for a good time make us like pirates of the Inland PNW, with wheatfields for seas and grain silos for sails. Fittingly, I chose a 12/8 time signature for the first half, as this feels more lilting and perky. As much fun as this stage is, the piece begins to slowly correct itself at the French Horn solo, when things snap into 4/4 time and start feeling a little murkier and eventually more clear-headed. In the end, the ensemble regains the momentum they need to finish on a high note (and turn in that exam the next morning). The PDF download includes the score followed by each individual part.
