This arrangement of O Christmas Tree, or in German, O Tannenbaum, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts and recitals, and, perhaps, even church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of part (8 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.O Christmas Tree is a German Christmas song based on a traditional folk song which was unrelated to Christmas. The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the course of the 19th century, and the song came to be seen as a Christmas carol. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by the Leipzig organist, teacher and composer, Ernst Anschutz. A tannenbaum is a fir tree. The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps. I think that students will enjoy this imitative section in the song. In addition to this version for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, there are also other arrangements of O Christmas Tree available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. Půjdem Spolu do Betléma roughly translates to Let's Go Together to Bethlehem and it is a popular Czech Christmas carol. This setting is for mixed brass quartet (two trumpets, one trombone, one tuba). This tune- and this subsequent arrangement- has some musical references to an instrument sometimes called the Czech bagpipe or Dudy. Thus, there are subtle musical references to this austere instrument with brief bagpipe-like drones and a humorous portion in the middle where the player gets stuck. Ossia notes are included to help with the more challenging portions of the arrangement (particularly the involved tuba part). My apologies for the error-prone recording as my chops were not in good condition for the multi-track effort.

The Gloucestershire Wassail is one of many traditional wassails (festive songs, carols) associated with the centuries-old tradition of wassailing. In the West of England from where this particular song comes, groups of people would go door to door, singing and offering a drink of mulled cider (wassail) from a large, decorated bowl (the wassail bowl) in exchange for other drinks, food, and gifts. The custom of sharing the wassail bowl is supposedly of Saxon origin, a drinking ritual dating to the Middle Ages and derived from one of the observances of the Feast of Yule. Today it is associated with Christmas-tide, the twelve days from December 25 through January 5. Gabriel's Message (The Angel Gabriel to Heaven Came) is a folk carol from the Basque Country, the region that straddles the westernmost Pyrenees Mountains in adjacent parts of northern Spain and southwestern France. A vernacular paraphrase of the 13th/14th-century Latin carol, Angelus ad virginem, the text was translated from Basque and paraphrased into English by the Anglican priest and scholar Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924). Commonly sung at Advent and Christmas, Gabriel's Message quotes the biblical account of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) and the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) in its opening lines:The angel Gabriel from heaven came,his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;All hail, said he, thou lowly maiden Mary,most highly favoured lady. Gloria!The Basque tune was collected and published by the French composer Charles Bordes (1863-1909) in Archives de la tradition basque (1890) and was arranged and published by the English organist/choirmaster Edgar Pettman (1866-1943) in his 1892 collection, Modern Christmas Carols. Blest Mary Walks Amid the Thorn (Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging) is a German folk carol that is thought to date to the 16th century. It first appears in print in 1850 as a pilgrimage song, having been spread orally in the traditionally Catholic state of Thuringia, a densely forested area in central Germany. In the 20th century, the song became popular in a version relating the story of Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, on her journey to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. The text uses the popular Medieval symbol of the rose for the Virgin Mary and speaks of roses blooming on barren thorn-wood as Mary bears her child through the forest. It has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960's and is performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Some critics have called it astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original and characteristic. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video.The Nutcracker continues to be one of Tchaikovsky's most popular compositions and contains some of his most memorable works. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, and is intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer's direction, on March 19, 1892. The suite became instantly popular with almost every number encored at its premiere.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could also have the opportunity to play some of these wonderful compositions, originally scored for a full orchestra, and has arranged two of the selections, the popular March and the Russian Dance, one of the character dances, based on the traditional Russian and Ukrainian folk dance, Trepak, for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. So, in addition to this version of the Russian Dance for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection for various Quintets and Octets and are readily available. If you should decide to purchase this arrangement of the Russian Dance, I would highly encourage you to also consider purchasing the arrangement of the March as well. Scheduling the March followed by the Russian Dance would be a very satisfying addition to any concert or recital. Please take the time to look for other versions of these compositions. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as there are numerous selections in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. The first, “Fum, Fum, Fum,†is a Catalan carol from northeastern Spain. The second, “Pat-a-Pan,†comes from the Burgundy region of east-central France. The third, “Touro-Louro-Louro!†comes from the Provence region of southeastern France.Each tune bears an onomatopoetic title (a word that phonetically imitates or suggests the source of the sound that it describes): The refrain “fum, fum, fum†in the Catalan carol is an onomatopoeia for the strumming of a guitar. “Pat-a-pan†— the title of the Burgundian carol — imitates the sound of a drum being struck. “Touro-louro-louro!†— the title of the Provencal carol — suggests the singing of birds.
