The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the course of the 19th century, and the song came to be seen as a Christmas carol. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by the Leipzig organist, teacher and composer, Ernst Anschutz. A tannenbaum is a fir tree. The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps. Â Â Â Â A song learned in primary school years and years ago had words something along the lines of the following:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Oh!Â Iâ€™m a young musician,Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â From distant lands I come.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Singing and playing,Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Ever Iâ€™m straying.Â Â Â Â Also known as â€œI Am a Fine Musician,â€ â€œI Am a Gay Musicianâ€ and perhaps other titles, that song is still around and has evolved into many different versions.Â The original was probably a German folk song from the early 1800s.Â As published in an 1889 collection of childrenâ€™s songs, it bears the title, â€œIch bin ein Musikant.â€Â That translates as â€œI am a musician.â€Â In the lyrics the musician claims to be â€œfrom Schwabenlandâ€ (Swabia) and to play geige (violin: â€œDide schum schum schumâ€), flÃ¶te (flute: â€œPÃ¤de wÃ¤pp pÃ¤pp pÃ¤ppâ€) and basse (bass: â€œDide schum schum schump, pÃ¤de wÃ¤pp pÃ¤pp pÃ¤pp).Â Later versions list the instruments played by the musician as bassoon, bells, clarinet, drum, guitar, piano, piccolo, triangle, trombone, trumpet, tuba, tympani, viola and just about every instrument and noisemaker you can think of. All twelve movements have now been transcribed and arranged by Regis Bookshar to be played by Trumpet Quintets or Brass Quintets. Some of them have also been arranged for Sextets, Septets, Octets, Nonets and Brass Choirs. Some also include a Timpani.
