Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928135). Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is one of Brahms' most popular works, expertly arranged here for Brass Quintet by American composer P. F. Strohm. Brahms wrote this piece (Op. 56) in the summer of 1873, first for two pianos then as an orchestral work. It is well-known for its unique five-measure phrasing of the chorale, which is used throughout the piece. Brahms kept this basic structure while developing the material in each variation, creating ten related-but-separate musical gems. This works out well for brass players, as individual variations range from just under a minute to just over three minutes for the finale. The piece is a joy to perform. The variations can be combined at will to fit performer skills for recitals, concerts and contests. Played in its entirety, Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is a striking concert showpiece with a typical performance time of 17:50. This third edition of the arrangement has uses a new font, clarifies some accidentals, and improves the part layouts. Difficulty level for the piece varies between Medium and Medium-Advanced. Bud Caputo #1087079. Published by Bud Caputo (A0.1512009). Träumerei is a part of Schumann's Scene from Childhood, which was his first attempt at writing for piano solo. The Dreaming piece itself was the seventh in the set and was written as a tribute to his four-year-old daughter Marie. The composition was published on the 27th of December 1838 with Schumann's Kinderscenen, Op. 15 (Scenes from Childhood) as its title. The title was given by the composer himself and it echo's his longing for his childhood and for the innocence of his children. It should be performed with a great deal of (rubato (give and take) of the phrasing and tempo, which will challenge students to watch their conductor very carefully. This entertaining and playful cakewalk, forerunner of ragtime style, is by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Nathaniel Dett who studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. Scored for two trumpets in B-flat (with alternate C trumpet parts), horn (with flugelhorn substitute), trombone (with treble clef euphonium substitute) and tuba, the arrangement has wide audience appeal and is very accessible for less experienced players. Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.14 in C# minor (Sonata quasi una Fantasia) Op.27. No.2, Mvt.1 also known as the Moonlight Sonata is probably the best known of his compositions.Unlike other arrangements you will find on this site (and other sites) I have taken the unusual step of removing a large proportion of the triplet accompaniment figure, which is found in the original piano composition.Other arrangers for brass quintet tend give this figure, as a rule, to the horn or trombone who play the triplets all the way through the piece.I have tried to arrange it as though it had been originally written for the brass  quintet.My arrangement retains some of the triplets (the rising arpeggios) and sometimes uses the triplets on one note to add dramatic effect.The net result is more of a chorale, but I feel it does retain the forward movement from the original with the use of moving staccato crotchets (quarter notes) I have transposed this arrangement into D minor from the original C sharp minor.

Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music. The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri.  The Britannica website explains, “Ragtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.â€Â    But it wasn’t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtime’s popularity began to soar.  By 1900 ragtime was the popular music.  It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it.  By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.    Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began.  And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime.  In fact, the “Big Three†composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.    Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplin’s early ragtime publications.  From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.    One of Lamb’s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled “Patricia Rag.†(The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.)  It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2.  Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio.      This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length.  It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments.  Possible exceptions for some players include:  (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Teresa Carreño (1853 – 1917) was a Venezuelan pianist, soprano, composer, and conductor. Over the course of her 54-year concert career, she became an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the Valkyrie of the Piano. Carreño also frequently performed the works of Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843–1907). Shecomposed approximately 75 works for solo piano, voice and piano, choir and orchestra, and instrumental ensemble. Several composers dedicated their compositions to Carreño, including Amy Beach and Edward MacDowell.
