The Gallant Seventh was composed in 1922, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2019. The piece is catalogued as Volume 5, No. 95.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

After an eight bar introduction with rising trumpet eighth notes, the chorale is stated in block chords by the horn, trombone and tuba with the two trumpets repeating the phrases. The five instruments come together at the point where the chorale modulates to B flat Major/G minor, and again at the conclusion with the two trumpets repeating their eighth note running passages. This festive style arrangement is ideal for both church and college at any time during the year, and especially during Thanksgiving. The introduction is very much in the style of a fanfare. The first melodic statement is in the trumpets and horn then added contrapuntally by the trombone. The next phrase alternates between the lower voices and then upper voices. Next, the melody is augmented rhythmically while support by chordal movement underneath. A quick modulation upward with motives much like the beginning with the motive tossed about amongst the different voices. Then comes a slow section with expressive movement between the voices with the melodic material and the supported chords become increasingly more bold right up to a solid ending.

It was introduced in Howard Hughes' last film One Minute to Zero as the instrumental titled Theme from One Minute to Zero. Jeri Southern sang on the first vocal recording released in April 1952 with the song's composer, Victor Young, handling the arranging and conducting duties. The song has become a standard, with many artists recording it; the first hit version was sung by Doris Day released in July 1952.Day's recording was made on June 5, 1952. It was released by Columbia Records as catalog number 39786 and issued with the flip side Take Me in Your Arms. The song reached number 20 on the Billboard chart.A 1996 recording by Natalie Cole, sung as a duet with her father Nat King Cole using vocals from his 1956 version, won 1996 Grammys for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and Best Instrumental Arrangement with Accompanying Vocal(s).Lovely chord progressions here! Shall We Dance, from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King And I, debuted on Broadway in 1951 and in the movie version in 1956, with Deborah Kerr lip-synching Marni Nixon as she and Yul Brynner polka around the Siamese palace. This arrangement draws from the movie rendition, which ranks No. 54 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie songs. But don't play it in Bangkok. Thailand banned the movie (and a subsequent remake) not long after its release, based on the not entirely inaccurate assessment that it reflects poorly on the Brynner character, the real-life King Mongkut, great-great-grandfather of Thailand's current monarch. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768520). Victor Ewald 27 November 1860 - 16 April 1935 Ewald was a Russian composer of music, mainly for conical brass instruments. He was born in Saint Petersburg and died in Leningrad. He also collected and published Russian folk songs. Ewald’s professional life, like that of many of his musical contemporaries, was in an entirely different field; that of a civil engineer, in which he excelled, being appointed in 1900 as professor and manager of the Faculty of Construction Materials at the Institute of Civil Engineers. Brass players however are indebted to him for something very different – a series of quintets which have become a staple of the repertoire and which represent almost the only, and certainly the most extended examples of original literature in the Romantic style. Ewald’s formal musical training began in 1872 when he enrolled at the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of twelve. Founded in 1861 by Anton Rubenstein, this institution was the first of its kind in Russia and it was here that Ewald received lessons in cornet, piano, horn, cello, harmony and composition. As an adult he worked alongside fellow musical nationalists known collectively as the Mighty Handful-Borodin, Mily Balakirev, CeÌsar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky and the most famous of all, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. All of these men had day jobs in non-musical fields.Ewald’s contributions as a composer reflected an abiding love for brass instruments for which he wrote his quintets scored originally for two cornets, alto horn, baritone horn and tuba. I've edited these four quartets using Ewald's original instrumentation, but there are also separate substitute parts for the modern brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba).
