The work was written in 1860/61 by two English clergymen, Rev. John Bacchus Dykes and the lyrics by Rev. William Whiting with inspiration from the Old and New Testaments. The Navy Hymn is also known as Melita. This noble music was a favorite of President Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt and was performed at the funeral of John F. Kennedy. Scott Pappal has beautifully arranged this moving work for brass quintet. It can be performed by moderately advanced performers and would be a very nice addition to a service.

The young Eubie taught himself the organ after his parents put a $75 organ in their home for 25 cents per week (which would take them almost 6 years to pay off). By the age of 15 was playing piano in Baltimore's night clubs, holding a regular job at Agnes Shelton's sporting house. Blake was already an exceptional pianist by the early 1900's, and he had to simplify his music drastically to get it published. Blake was among the pioneers of ragtime, however he was often too far ahead of his time. He released two rags (Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz) in the same year which Scott Joplin released his Maple Leaf Rag. Unfortunately for Blake, the competition was too strong. Part of the reason for Blake's Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz not making the big time may have been due to Blake the progressive nature of his sound. People found it hard to digest his music, especially the publishers. Bugle Call Rag was composed in 1916 with Carey Morgan. It was one of many patriotic selections written by composers during the World War I era. This delightful piece uses bugle calls and quotes There’ll Be A Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight.A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Good King Wenceslas, a traditional Christmastime favorite has been transformed by this arranger into a spectacular brass quintet feature. It is joyous and energetic and demonstrates strong melody content with antiphonal bell-like sounds and subtle echoes. Two modulations and three easily played key signatures make this piece a winner for any brass quintet. 1st trumpet part to high D measure easily plays one octave lower if need be. This is a grade 4 level - medium advanced arrangement and will be a definite audience favorite. The original melody/tune was based on a 13th-century spring carol Tempus adest floridum (The time is near for flowering) was first published in the 1582 Finnish song collection Piae Cantiones. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808700). Brandon Thomas’ three-act farce, Charley’s Aunt, opened in London in 1892 and was a huge success. It has since been performed and adapted many times. One such adaptation was Where’s Charley? a 1948 Broadway version with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Ray Bolger played the starring role as Charley, and its most memorable number was the second act’s Once In Love With Amy. Every night Bolger would perform the number, then turn to the audience and invite them to sing along with him. They loved it, and Bolger would continue to perform it as his signature act for years even after the play closed. The rhythmic and melodic nature of Once In Love With Amy, particularly its chorus, seems to lend itself to performance by musical instruments in the lower registers. And that’s what inspired this arrangement in which bass tuba carries the load with strong support from euphonium and tuba. All play the eight-measure introduction, while the verse-I caught you, sir, having a look at her as she went strolling by-features euphonium and tuba playing melody while bass tuba provides tempo and pulse. Then comes the familiar chorus-Once in love with Amy, always in love with Amy-and bass tuba takes over. The first time through, bass tuba plays melody with the other two providing accompaniment; the second time, bass tuba plays an intricate counterpoint while euph and tuba do a rather smooth swing version of the melody. Then comes the surprise ending in which all three participate. Most players will have little trouble. The arrangement consists of 75 measures in 4/4 time. There are several tempo changes; the fastest is quarter note equals 108. Key signature is G, changing to F at measure 44. All notes for euphonium and bass tuba should be within normal playing range. Tuba, on the other hand, plays quite a few G and A notes at the top of the treble clef. Sweetwater Brass Press also offers a similar version of Once In Love With Amy arranged for brass quintet. This arrangement was completed in 2020, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 1 second. Published by Second Wind Music (A0.1472617). “Philadelphia Morning” is a powerfully expressive composition that sets the tone for a scene early in the movie Rocky when the main character has just found out the he will get to fight the world champion boxer and sets out for a training run in the gritty city streets of Philadelphia at 4 a.m. on a dark, cold, dreary winter day. (click here to see a clip of this scene from the movie) This beautifully written piece is penetrating and pensive in describing the battle within, the solitude of it, the impossibility at hand, and generally, the struggle involved in pushing oneself. There is a powerful but subtle orchestration here; the sound of a kind of musical undertow — an undertow that is pulling our hero down, as if giving him leaden legs, or of running in quicksand. But there is also a twinkle of possibility. At the end, the [music] trails off and there is uncertainty in the air.” [From: Jack Doyle, “Philadelphia Morning: 1976-1977,” PopHistoryDig.com, March 25, 2015.]This brass quintet arrangement of Philadelphia Morning would work well as a short concert piece that showcases the expressive qualities of the French horn as well as that of the whole ensemble. This piece has a quiet, pensive, somewhat moody tempermanent. While this arrangement is not technically challenging (other than the range for the horn part noted below), the lean scoring and soft dynamics requires the ensemble to pay close attention to balance and play as one in style, tone quality, and expressiveness. Phrases passing from one player to another need to flow as if being played on a piano. The expressive opening eight-bar horn solo, which is a direct transcription from the movie score, is mostly unaccompanied and ranges up to a high b-flat so a strong, confident horn player is needed – but they will surely enjoy playing this elegantly written passage. (The film soundtrack recording features Vincent DeRosa on horn.) The bass trombone part can be played on a tuba.

The third movement uses syncopated harmonic backgrounds to make passages in two sound as if they could be in three, and passages in three sound as if they might be in two. The middle movement could be described as a hymn, through it written for the most part in 10/8 meter. The lyricism of the music doesn't suffer from these rhythmic complexities. I think it stands out more strongly because of it. Suitable for advanced intermediate players or professionals. Duration: 9 minutes, 50 seconds.

Well…this was originally written specifically for one of our education shows (Sailing the High Seas), but we decided it’s worth putting out into the world because it’s shorter and substantially less taxing than the standard editions. This particular arrangement has been reduced to under 2 minutes, making it perfect for education shows when you want some Dixieland, but you don’t have all day. There’s enough written-in-improv lines (inspired by the Louis Armstrong recordings) to make it feel right, but without requiring actual improvisation. And, as always, there’s ample rest for the higher brass players. This piece is so painless to play that it could be put at the end of any recital, no matter how tiring, and everyone can get through this last piece while taking the audience out with some Dixieland fun.We also have a trio version of this piece!Duration: just under 2 minutes
