This arrangement for brass quintet uses Renaissance techniques to provide a vibrant and festive setting. The Horn, Trombone and Tuba carry the chorale while the two trumpets accompany with florid imitative eighth-note motifs. The musical effect is bold and striking. This arrangement is suitable in a service of worship during the Easter season, it is also ideal repertoire for High School and College Brass Quintet ensembles. The full score has all five individual parts attached and the performance duration is around two minutes. An ideal hymn selection for Easter Sunday, Eastertide, or at any celebration of the eucharist, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing is one of many hymns translated from Latin by Robert Campbell (1814-1868), a Scottish advocate (lawyer) and Roman Catholic layperson. First published in 1850, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing was one of four of Campbell's hymn texts to be included in Hymns Ancient & Modern (1861), the first standardized and popular hymnal of the Anglican Church.The tune accompanying the text, known as SALZBURG, is attributed to the German composer Jakob Hintze (1622-1702). Its harmonization has long been attributed to J.S. Bach and numbered among his works as BWV 262. Hearts to Heaven and Voices Raise,†and his All Saints Day text, “Hark! The Sound of Holy Voices,†Arthur S. Sullivan's tune LUX EOI may be used with any hymn in 8.7.8.7 D meter.Best known for his Victorian-era collaborations with dramatist and librettist W.S. Gilbert on comic operas including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado, Sullivan (1842-1900) displayed prodigious musical talent early in life, writing his ï¬rst anthem at age eight, joining the Chapel Royal as a chorister at age 12, and earning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 14. He later studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and while still in his teens began building a reputation as a promising young composer. Among Sullivan’s works are 24 operas, 11 full orchestral works, 10 choral works and oratorios, and more than 70 hymns and anthems, including the hymn tunes ST. Air Craft is a slow chorale-like movement with five-four meter and jazz harmony. Humoreske is a lively rondo in six-eight meter. The fourth movement, Ballad of the Bells, is a waltz that features flugelhorn and trombone solos on the melody. The suite ends with Blast of Brass, characterized by a fast tempo, sudden dynamic shifts, and driving rhythms. Brass Tasks was commissioned by the Gustavus Adolphus College and Mankato State University faculty brass quintet and premiered at Gustavus Adolphus College in 1998.Duration 11 minutes.
