When I wrote the first few distinctive notes into the computer, my ten-year-old son said that it sounded “futuristic.” Somehow that sparked memories of a novel I had started years ago, titled “Dimension Traveler,” based on dimensional theories I had developed. With that fresh inspiration in mind, the piece wrote itself with opening movie credits in mind.The form is thematically palindromic, the center point being m. 77. The beginning to rehearsal letter A mirrors K to the end; A to B is parallel to J-K; B-C = I-J; C-D = H-I; D-E = G-H; and the central thematic sections E-F = F-G. Concerning that central turning point, the thematic material shifts from the trumpets’ first statement at letter E to low brass with the trumpets taking on the pointillistic accompaniment at letter F. Of interest is the parallel of C-D and H-I wherein the motivic material, including dynamics, is quite literally reversed note for note to a climax.For aural aesthetics in performance, there is an optional cut from letter K to m. 142. Thematically, the structure remains chiastic, but taking the cut simply truncates the end for a motivic flavor rather than repeating the entire opening entrée. There is nothing wrong with purists performing the work in its entirety—it is simply a matter of taste among the performing ensemble members.Stylistically, this piece strays far from my typical compositions. Besides the pervasive echoing eighth-note motifs, the key never changes, and there is no chromaticism. Inspired in that regard by the masterpiece “Quintet” by Michael Kamen, the diatonicism often flows in planed clusters mildly influenced by the choral works of Eric Whitacre. Another deviation from my well-established compositional habits is the instrumentation including bass trombone instead of tuba. Of course the part can be played by a tubist, though the bass trombone meshes more seamlessly with the timbres of the other instruments in passing along the pervasively echoing eighth-notes.The individual brass parts appear deceptively simple, and indeed, they are not technically demanding besides a couple high notes in the trumpets. However, putting this piece together in an ensemble setting is rhythmically treacherous!The four-minute final product indeed sounds like it could be the opening to an epic movie of the same title, based on the novel-in-progress.

The first half underscores time lapse footage of the rapidly melting snowman, syncing precise sforzando punctuations to moments of falling chunks. The sunset remains were gleefully decimated by our six-year-old James.Shuttle from Haneda depicts a delayed return from a trip. The video elicited an atonal compositional style to underscore the hustle and chaos of a city as enormous as Tokyo, but with a lovely view of the Bay about midway through the work.Petite Wave was composed to accompany a time lapse hanging of a three-panel canvas print of the woodcut art “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. This art was featured on the cover of Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” when it was published in 1905, prompting a quote from “La Mer.”Fast Food to Fitness aurally illustrates a pan of nine fast food ads on a sheet. The bottom ad ironically promotes “BeFit 360”. The music has a series of exciting flourishes that morph into a sinister chord as the last ad dampens the caloric prospects.Pigeons personifies a substantial flock of pigeons contentedly pecking at grass. I filmed while slowly approaching, occasionally causing a stir. The nervous flock took flight to find less threatening spot of ground to peck. The scene presented some fine opportunities for musical underscoring.Blue Snowman Group accompanies a rare Tokyo storm that dumped inches of wet packing snow. When my ten-year-old started rolling the base of a snowman, I whipped out my cell phone and started a time lapse video. Mom came out and built her own, armed with a spray bottle of colored water. The two snowmen turned blue in the cold and lived happily together for a couple of days.Autumn Fuji Puzzle undersores tightly crafted moments of puzzle-working and deconstruction.Outing in Japan was crafted to highlight key moments of a time lapse, running errands in northwest Tokyo. Many subtle and obvious moments in this work aurally augment visually stimulating moments, including blinking turn signals, passing traffic, turns, vehicle approaches, parking at destinations, and many more.

As the story goes, it was inspired when Holiday's mother refused her a loan with the words, God bless the child that's got his own. She and frequent collaborator Arthur Herzog Jr. then put the song together in 20. Or so the story goes. Whatever the case, this classic anthem, covered by just about every singer born since then, is in the Grammy Hall of Fame. It also helped win a Grammy for Album of the Year for Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1968. They also performed it at Woodstock. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba (featuring the trombonist in the role of lead BS&T singer David Clayton-Thomas), is based on their treatment of Holiday's soulful tune.

It's on everybody's list of greatest songs ever. The unending guitar solo that fades out to end the song -- by Hotel composer Don Felder and Joe Walsh -- gets a nod here with 16 bars of trombone solo. OK, it's not quite the same thing. Nor is any of it. But you try to get a ringing 12-string guitar sound out of a couple of trumpets and a French horn.I think it's at least recognizable, and maybe even presentable. This arrangement is built from a barbershop arrangement found floating on the 'net from a gay men's chorus, with the four higher horns -- two trumpets, horn, trombone -- providing the quartet. Johann Strauss Sr. wrote this catchy celebratory march in 1848, a month after the Count Josef Radetzky won a now long-forgotten victory in the first Italian war for independence from the Austrian Empire; Radetzky had been a leading light of the Austro-Hungarian army throughout the first half of the 19th century. It was an immediate hit, and it remains so in Austria. These days it's kind of an unofficial national anthem that involves audience participation (clapping and stomping in the appropriate loud passages) and is kind of required content in any concert program, frequently as an encore. In the U.S., it's an Oktoberfest standby. My first exposure to Radetzky came when the Stadtmusik Feldkirch, a community band, was kind enough to allow an American ex-pat to join its ranks for the couple of years we lived there. Feldkirch is a lovely medieval town in far western Austria; it borders directly on Liechtenstein. I played the tenorhorn, which is the alias for a baritone or euphonium over there.

Well…this was originally written specifically for one of our education shows (Sailing the High Seas), but we decided it’s worth putting out into the world because it’s shorter and substantially less taxing than the standard editions. This particular arrangement has been reduced to under 2 minutes, making it perfect for education shows when you want some Dixieland, but you don’t have all day. There’s enough written-in-improv lines (inspired by the Louis Armstrong recordings) to make it feel right, but without requiring actual improvisation. And, as always, there’s ample rest for the higher brass players. This piece was inspired by a post-concert reception with the Sioux City Symphony to which all musicians, season ticket holders, and other select guests were invited. As I found a place to sit down and geek out with some fellow trumpeters, a group of concertgoers began to gather at the adjacent table. Each guest that joined that animated group added more character until they had spilled over into our small gathering. Their conversations also spilled over, including a couple of mild warnings about one final guest who would be joining us, who had already had just a bit too much to drink. Of course, she sat by me—a seasoned Brit with an easy-going love of life. During the course of the evening, several pairs of glasses made their way out of her purse and onto her head. Her friend asked me to take her picture and send it to her. That dignified portrait, textured and filtered with color highlights, became the cover to this work. “Concertgoers†is a musical soundtrack to that memorable evening with the unforgettable group of concertgoers. It begins with the motivic intro in the horn that becomes the main melodic content throughout the work which repeats in allusion to concertgoers joining the festivities one by one until the party blooms in full. Quirky and fun, this piece paints a fitting aural picture of the cacophonous reception and varied chatter of the evening. The use of chromaticism provides much of the quirkiness, along with the use of mixed meter for some of the varieties of that night of entertainment. These modern compositional techniques challenge a good college-level quintet, though it is accessible to the musicians and listenable to the average concertgoer. To program it on a brass quintet concert or recital aptly tips the hat in acknowledgement of the audience, as it is a dedicated piece just for them!

While light-themed in nature, this arrangement places musical challenges upon the performers, all of whom should be medium advanced in their performance skills. This arrangement is written alla breve and begins in the key of F Major (concert), but modulates to G Major (concert) and eventually concludes in Ab Major (concert). The Trumpet I part ascends scale-wise to written Eb above high C at the end of a run at one point. The French Horn has a couple of instances of a written high G, A, and Bb above the staff. Otherwise, ranges are reasonable.The arrangement has multiple musical references to the American West. To this arranger the melody suggested a reference to fiddle tunes and barn dances, an important social and cultural past-time of the era. It seemed like a logical direction to steer this arrangement.
