Grafulla (1810-1880) was bandmaster for New York’s 7th Regimental band and became one of the key contributors of pieces for the Port Royal Band Books used during the American Civil War. Graffulla was responsible for the introduction at the front of J.P. Rowbotham’s Palmyra Schottische composition, originally #45 in the Port Royal Band Books, which is presented here in an arrangement for Brass Quintet. Â

Will Corbin #1040025. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461115). Hotel California is probably the best known -- and possibly best, period -- song from the Eagles, from the album of the same title. It's on everybody's list of greatest songs ever. The unending guitar solo that fades out to end the song -- by Hotel composer Don Felder and Joe Walsh -- gets a nod here with 16 bars of trombone solo. OK, it's not quite the same thing. Nor is any of it. But you try to get a ringing 12-string guitar sound out of a couple of trumpets and a French horn.I think it's at least recognizable, and maybe even presentable. The videos and photos that inspired this short but compelling composition and subsequent YouTube video were all shot on 5 Jun 2023 while visiting family near the desert of eastern Utah. Springtime in that region had been particularly wet, so the cactus flowers were in full bloom and everything that was customarily brown was green! That glorious excursion with my wife’s sister and her husband was one of the final huzzahs in America before moving to Japan for several years. The YouTube post of the exquisite videos and pictures was finalized and published on 16 Jun 2024, reminiscing on our one-year anniversary of being in Japan. Duration: 1:30.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458394). TUBA ALERT! Most recorded versions of this Henry Mancini classic hand the melody to flutes and piccolos. But baby elephants don't piccolo, they tuba. (This from actual personal experience.) So the heavy melodic lifting in this arrangement goes there. The song was featured in the 1962 latter-day John Wayne adventure romance comedy Hatari, a film from which its theme song is the only thing worth remembering. The song won Mancini a 1963 Grammy for best instrumental song. A 1962 recording by Lawrence Welk (!) reached No. 48 on Billboard's Hot 100. My dad loved Dixieland music, so I arranged a lot of it for his enjoyment (and we made it part of the party we put together to celebrate his life, along with a lot of martinis). Muskrat Ramble was one of the first. It's a Kid Ory tune -- although that has long been in dispute -- that was first recorded in 1926 by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five. Louis Armstrong's version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.The music and lyrics were written by Jerry Herman, who also wrote the scores for many other popular musicals including Mame and La Cage aux Folles.History:Hello, Dolly! was first sung by Carol Channing, who starred as Dolly Gallagher Levi in the original 1964 Broadway cast. In December 1963, at the behest of his manager, Louis Armstrong made a demonstration recording of Hello, Dolly! for the song's publisher to use to promote the show. Hello, Dolly! opened on January 16, 1964, at the St. James Theatre in New York City, and it quickly became a major success.The same month, Kapp Records released Armstrong's publishing demo as a commercial single.
