The Lacrimosa (Latin for weeping/tearful), also a name that derives from Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to The Virgin Mary, is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. Lacrimosa dies illa Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Amen. Full of tears will be that day When from the ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged; Therefore spare him, O God, Merciful Lord Jesus, Grant them eternal rest. Amen. The piece begins piano on a rocking rhythm in 12/8, intercut with quarter rests, which will be reprised after two bars, on Lacrimosa dies illa (This tearful day). Then follows a diatonic progression, in disjointed eighth-notes on the text resurget (will be reborn), then legato and chromatic on a powerful crescendo. The music is forte by bar 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. Süssmayr brings the music to a reference of the Introit and ends on an Amen cadence. Discovery of a fragmentary Amen fugue in Mozart's hand has led to speculation that it may have been intended for the Requiem. Indeed, many modern completions (such as Levin's) complete Mozart's fragment. Some sections of this movement are quoted in the Requiem mass of Franz von Suppé, who was a great admirer of Mozart. Ray Robinson, the music scholar and president (from 1969 to 1987) of the Westminster Choir College, suggests that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses, Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow in completing this movement.

It was most famously performed by Paul Robeson in a 1931 film version of the play, (It was remade in 1951 with Ava Gardner playing a mulatta singer in a part that would have gone to Lena Horne had the producers not feared the wrath of Southern moviegoers.) The story includes exposition of the plight of African-Americans in the South of the Gilded Age; as a result, its content (including the lyrics of this song) were altered to accommodate racist audiences. The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565, is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous organ compositions. It follows a typical North German structure with three main sections - a free opening (toccata), a fugal section (fugue), and a short free closing section. The exact date of composition is uncertain, but it's believed to have been written before 1708. There is no surviving autograph manuscript. The oldest known source is an undated copy by Johannes Ringk, a student of one of Bach's pupils. It was first published in 1833 through the efforts of composer Felix Mendelssohn during the early Bach Revival period. It gained widespread recognition after being featured in Disney's 1940 film Fantasia, which Leopold Stokowski adapted for orchestra. The piece has become strongly associated with horror films and Gothic imagery in Western culture. The Toccata begins with dramatic flourishes and arpeggios, showcasing the organist's virtuosity. The fugue is characterized by overlapping repetitions of the central theme in different melodic lines. It employs simple triadic harmony but includes some unexpected elements, such as a C minor subject entry and a solo pedal statement.

This particular arrangement for brass quintet features the french horn. The luxurious and soaring sounds of the horn give a new spirit to the sweet melody of this tune, whilst the rest of the ensemble (trumpets, trombone, and tuba) provide a light version of the original piano accompaniment. Elgar wrote this work as an engagement present for his wife, Caroline Alice, and dedicates it à Carice- a combination of her names. It was originally titled Liebesgruss, or Love's Greeting and later revised to Salut d'Amour post publication. This simple arrangement is an excellent embodiment of the tender and loving inspiration presented in its original version.

Arranged standard brass quintet Mozart's textual inspiration is apparent in the Tuba mirum (Hark, the trumpet) movement, which is introduced with a sequence of three notes in arpeggio, played in B♠major by a solo tenor trombone, unaccompanied, in accordance with the usual German translation of the Latin tuba, Posaune (trombone). Two measures later, the bass soloist enters, imitating the same theme. At m. 7, there is a fermata, the only point in all the work at which a solo cadence occurs. The final quarter notes of the bass soloist herald the arrival of the tenor, followed by the alto and soprano in dramatic fashion. On the text Cum vix justus sit securus (When only barely may the just one be secure), there is a switch to a homophonic segment sung by the quartet at the same time, articulating, without accompaniment, the cum and vix on the strong (1st and 3rd), then on the weak (2nd and 4th) beats, with the violins and continuo responding each time; this interruption (which one may interpret as the interruption preceding the Last Judgment) is heard sotto voce, forte and then piano to bring the movement finally into a crescendo into a perfect cadence. My arrangement gives the trombone part to the horn, and the vocal entries are given to the trombone, horn and two trumpets. . Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.

Mvt.3 Rex tremundae summary A descending melody composed of dotted notes is played by to announce the Rex tremendae majestatis (King of tremendous majesty, i.e., God), who is called by powerful cries on the syllable Rex during the pauses. For a surprising effect, the Rex syllables fall on the second beats of the measures, even though this is the weak beat. The melodies adoptthe dotted rhythm, forming what Wolff calls baroque music's form of topos of the homage to the sovereign,or, more simply put, that this musical style is a standard form of salute to royalty, or, in this case, divinity. This movement consists of only 22 measures, but this short stretch is rich in variation: homophonic writing and contrapuntal passages alternate many times and finish on a quasi-unaccompanied choral cadence, landing on an open D chord (as seen previously in the Kyrie). Excellent fun for eery player.
