After the Second World War, Shostakovich was expected to compose a great Ninth Symphony with giant forces to be dedicated to the great leader, Stalin and the greatness of the Russian people. Instead, he wrote an abstract, almost Neoclassical work full of mockery, playfulness, and bombastic gestures.The first movement of this great work is featured in a fantastic arrangement by Wes Ballenger for Brass Quintet with optional Percussion (only one performer needed) and can be performed by advanced artists. The instrumentation is for: 2 Trumpets in C, Horn in F, Trombone, F Tuba or Bass Trombone and Percussion (snare drum and triangle). Dorm 40 Music #3246113. Published by Dorm 40 Music (A0.740270). 2017 Holiday Contest Entry Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker is universally popular and has become one of his most famous compositions. The ballet tells the story of a young girl who receives a nutcracker (in the form of a soldier) for Christmas. She falls asleep and dreams that all the Christmas presents come to life. Since the music of the Suite is so familiar, there is hardly any need to offer any additional description beyond the titles of each movement: March, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Russian Dance (Trepak), Chinese Dance (Tea), Spanish Dance (Chocolate) and Waltz of the Flowers. This arrangement has been carefully edited and abridged to insure that the music is idiomatic for brass. Your quintet may perform just one movement, all 6, or any combination you wish. And, for the price, 6 movements is a real bargain!! The Chinese Dance has been scored for B-flat piccolo trumpet, but it may also be played on a muted trumpet. This arrangement comes with both B-flat and C trumpet parts, as well as an optional timpani/percussion part (suspended cymbal, tambourine, castanets and triangle). Translated from Italian, the title of this work (“Scherzo Serioâ€) means “a serious joke.†The jocular nature resulting from the multi-meter and irregular meter, punctuated by strong jabs of sound, makes it impossible to tap one’s foot to the beat upon first hearing. The various sections of the work alternate between atonality and tertian harmony. As a whole it presents a clear three-part organization. This particularly fun and challenging two-minute brass quintet was completed in 2009 and premiered by the Faculty Brass Quintet from the University of Texas at San Antonio. MSgt Jim Bartelt (USAF, Retired) composed the majority of the percussion part when Gateway Brass from the USAF Band of the West toured with this piece in 2012.

This somber, gorgeous piece of music draws tears when presented correctly, and is an extraordinarily important contribution to the brass quintet repertoire. The Jewish “feast†(or “appointed timeâ€) of trumpets, as outlined in Leviticus 23:24-25, prescribes the observance: “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.†According to the Jewish calendar, the feast of trumpets in 2001 coincided exactly with the 9-11 attacks, which could indeed be thought of as “an offering made by fire.†Effectively no servile work was done on that day throughout the attacked nation, and it has indeed become a somber type of “sabbath†to observe every year. It seemed extraordinarily appropriate—perhaps even requisite—that a somber composition with trumpets be composed for the 20th annual observance of the horrific attacks on American soil, as a “Memorial†to those lost that day, and those who since perished in the Global War on Terror. “Where were you when you first heard about the 9-11 attacks?†This common question is posed to those who were of age to comprehend what had happened in 2001. Personally, I had just listened to an emotional rendition of Maurice Ravel’s “Pavane to a Dead Princess.†Elements of that musical memory influenced this present work “Memorial.†Other sources of inspiration—whether intended or subconscious—include Samuel Barber’s heart-wrenching “Adagio for Strings,†Michael Kamen’s “Quintet†for brass, and John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen.†The harmonies are thick and often dissonant, including many suspensions. The players get little rest, symbolic of the constant state of alertness of a shocked nation after being so brutally attacked. Perhaps of greatest symbolic import is the fact that there are exactly 911 notes in this composition. Because of this, it is crucial that the percussion part be performed, and that great care be taken by all performers to refrain from altering the notes or rhythms in any way. A comment on the interpretation of notation: all long notes that are tied to a staccato note on the downbeat are to be held to the downbeat and gently released, not held over.

When Dr. Thrower won the audition for a position in the Air Force Bands in 2011 it fulfilled a childhood dream of becoming a military musician. Then he experienced an intense eight-week party known as Basic Military Training! All new Airmen go through Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, which is known as the “Gateway to the Air Force.†Two reasons he chose to enter that Gateway were his patriotism toward the great United States of America, and the great benefits and security that the Air Force offered his family. With these passions in mind, he composed a rousing musical depiction of becoming an Airman. The composition began before Basic Training, so the excitement and anticipation that he felt are exuberantly presented as heroic fanfares and patriotic gestures. However, he completed the composition after boot camp. Accordingly, in the middle of the piece there are moments of struggle and anguish that musically paint the common rigors of Basic Training. The piece ends with recapitulated heroic strains with additional flourishes, as the overall feel for this new life chapter was bound to be exhilarating and inspiring. It is beneficial for the performers to visualize the exciting and difficult journey into the military as they prepare and perform “Gateway to Freedom.†Also a play on the title, this piece was composed for and premiered by “Gateway Brass†(the brass quintet from the USAF Band of the West) in October 2011. Special gratitude goes to Jim Bartelt (USAF, retired) who contributed greatly to the creation of the percussion part.

It is also highly effective as an encore (depending on endurance, particularly of the first trumpeter and hornist), leaving the audience with a rush and energy typified by an effective encore. Besides some minor edits and formatting, the composition was completed the day I hit my ten-year anniversary of serving in the United States Air Force Bands—a fitting anthem to celebrate a decade of service to my wonderful country! The title settled the next day as I began my second decade as an Airman Musician: Valor. The best account is recorded in my personal journal on 27 April 2021: “[Valor] is the Thrower family motto from hundreds of years ago. It’s also a concept that helped get me into [Arizona State University] for my doctoral studies. [Professor] Hickman asked for a very difficult orchestral excerpt during my audition. [Béla Bartók’s “Concerto for Orchestra.â€] I expressed some trepidation, but decided to give it a shot. I nailed it! Then Hickman turned to me with a big smile, ‘I give extra points for valor!’ So I’m pretty sure this little two-minute musical journal entry will keep the name ‘Valor’… as a motivational cheer for my next ten years in the Air Force. Valor! Great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle. Ok, in the face of life’s many battles, Valor it is! And on to the next ten years!†The music is in AA’BA’ form. The B section is heavily influenced by the thematic material of the A section, but with a strongly contrasting mood that could be dubbed quiet dignity. A finale section follows the last A with some motivic twists from throughout the piece, decisively ending with a power that could well be accompanied by a dazzling flurry of fireworks. None of the performers get much of a reprieve throughout the two minutes packed full of notes. The first trumpet part stays in the upper mid-range for most of it, which would absolutely sparkle on an E-flat trumpet (alternate part provided). Second trumpet is also demanding. The horn part demands a decent level of mastery in the high range as well as the low range, vehemently forsaking its traditional role of off beats. The trombone and tuba parts also present their challenges, and never really stop longer than to take a breath. Although this work could conceivably be performed without percussion, doing so is strongly discouraged. The power delivered by the snare, bass, and cymbals, and even the triangle in the B section, make the part arguably indispensable.

From the Shadow's Edge was commissioned by horn player in the US Air Force Bands, SSgt Alena Zidlicky, to honor her grandmother Beluse Urlich Zidlicky (Babi), who escaped the oppressive Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during WWII. For brass quintet and percussion, the horn is featured. The music of this composition begins in aural darkness, as if immersed in an inescapable shadow. The tense harmonies and contrapuntal motions of the brass are accompanied by two heartbeat motifs, in the tuba and bass drum, conjuring sentiments of fear and uncertainty. Emotions swell as the solo horn enters with contrasting triplet rhythms that struggle against the complex mixture of duple strains throughout the other parts. This dark introduction serves as a prelude to the above storyline, which transitions quickly (and trepidatiously) out of the shadow. From rehearsal letter B through the remainder of the piece, hope permeates in the brightness, once escaped from the shadow’s ominous edge. The complex nature of the thematic overlapping and polyphonic texture of the quintet as a whole provide feelings of unrest, anticipation, hope, and yes, heroism. Nothing exudes heroism more than a soaring solo horn! This composition celebrates triumph over evil, whether during life or in death, and those who press on with a brightness of hope even in the darkest shadows that life can cast, as exemplified in the life of Beluse Ulrich Zidlicky.

A CV-22 Osprey aircraft from Yokota Air Base in Tokyo crashed, killing all eight crew members. Being stationed at Yokota as an Air Force Bandsman during that trying time, my emotions turned to music as a gift of solidarity from the PACAF Band to the grieving family members. The completed music was delivered to my Commander a week after the shocking event.On 15 February 2024, the Base conducted a somber memorial service for the eight heroes who gave their last full measure of devotion in the line of duty. This piece was performed in lieu of “Taps” toward the end of the ceremony, as “Taps” was to be sounded at the Base Retreat Ceremony later that day. The gift of music was profound. Tears from the family members seated in the front rows flowed freely at the end of the performance, punctuated by increased sobs. High-quality professional prints of the score and parts were paid for by the United States Air Force and gifted to families of the deceased and distinguished visitors at the memorial service.One poignant detail was that at the performance during the memorial service, the brass quintet was augmented by a Japanese trumpet player from the nearby Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Band. This symbolic gesture of solidarity greatly impacted the profundity of the event.Last Full Measure, Op. 143, for brass quintet was completed 6 Dec 2023. This composition is not to be confused with Op. 33: Last Full Measure of Devotion, for 24 trumpets. However, in an allusion to that monumental early work, this present brass quintet’s “last measures” echo the final strain of “Taps” in memory of the eight crew members who perished. Duration: 3:00.
