Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1251231 Composed by Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Comedy,Pop,Standards,Traditional. 37 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #845507. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1251231). This song starts with the narrator/lyricist saying that he overheard a guy at the train station trying to say farewell to his girl.  The guy would kiss her, bid her adieu, get on the train, then get off and do the whole thing over again.  And, he did this seven times!  What would he say to her each time?  He’d tell her that he’s leaving, that she shouldn’t cry, that he’ll write and that if she does not hear from him she should assume he’s been arrested.  What a romantic line!   Anyway, that’s the gist of the “Toot, Toot, Tootsie!†lyrics.  Credited to Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo, New York City’s Leo Feist, Inc. first published this upbeat, leave-taking song in 1922.  It had been one of 29 numbers featured in the 1921 Broadway production Bombo, a vehicle designed to showcase the talent of Al Jolson.  Six years later Jolson sang it in The Jazz Singer, generally recognized as the first sound feature film.  Additionally, all three composers, plus Ted Fio Rito and Eddie Cantor, also made early and very popular recordings.  This bubbly, cheerful arrangement opens in the key of F major with a suggested tempo of 120 BPM.  After an 8-measure introduction, the piece goes right to the familiar chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone switching leads and ending with a wonderful Fillmore-style smear.  The tempo then slows dramatically for a somewhat pensive interpretation of the verse, the narrator’s observations, Horn and Trumpet 1 alternating the lead.  At measure 67 the chorus repeats faster than ever, a recommended 132 BPM, as Trombone and the two Trumpets take turns with the melody.  This leads right into a repeat of the verse—this time played at full speed—and a change of key to D-flat major.  Trombone and Tuba play in unison, exchanging the melody with Trumpets, right on into the third go-round of the chorus.  The piece wraps up with a vaudeville-style conclusion and eventually fades away.  (But don’t miss Trombone's four-measure reference to “Charlottetown Is Burning Down/Goodbye, Liza Jane†at measure 141.)Lots of fun!  Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 2 minutes, 47 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1303802 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. 21st Century,Chamber,Children,Historic,Multicultural,World. 77 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #893335. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1303802).     A song learned in primary school years and years ago had words something along the lines of the following:         Oh! I’m a young musician,         From distant lands I come.         Singing and playing,         Ever I’m straying.    Also known as “I Am a Fine Musician,†“I Am a Gay Musician†and perhaps other titles, that song is still around and has evolved into many different versions. The original was probably a German folk song from the early 1800s. As published in an 1889 collection of children’s songs, it bears the title, “Ich bin ein Musikant.â€Â That translates as “I am a musician.â€Â In the lyrics the musician claims to be “from Schwabenland†(Swabia) and to play geige (violin: “Dide schum schum schumâ€), flöte (flute: “Päde wäpp päpp päppâ€) and basse (bass: “Dide schum schum schump, päde wäpp päpp päpp). Later versions list the instruments played by the musician as bassoon, bells, clarinet, drum, guitar, piano, piccolo, triangle, trombone, trumpet, tuba, tympani, viola and just about every instrument and noisemaker you can think of.     Anyway, that’s the tune on which “The Brass Player†was built. But here, the musician is concerned only with brass. Which brass? Well, possibly trumpet. Or maybe horn in F. Or trombone. Or tuba. Or perhaps all four; certainly, all are featured in this piece.    “The Brass Player†comprises four sections. The first is in the key of C major and is played at a moderate 2/4 tempo. After a brief Trumpet/Tuba ostinato, Trombone introduces the main theme. Other instruments join in and play around with a variation or two.     The second section is a sweet, nostalgic rendition in 4/4 carried mainly by Horn in F, with help from Trumpets and Trombone.     In section three, the mood changes radically. Time signature goes to 3/4; tempo speeds up to vivace and the key changes to B Minor. All five instruments participate, and some odd things take place rhythmically at I through K (measures 200 through 262), but Tuba seems to carry the melody most of the time.    Section four, in G Major, clips along at a fast 4/4 time. It returns to the main theme and (as in “Ich bin ein Musikant†and its multitudinous derivations) presents in call-and-response form. The first few measures are straight, but discord quickly creeps in. The melody begins to include smears, flutter tonguing and off-beat rhythmic figures. There is even a brief section in G Minor. Gradually, order and theme are restored and the piece ends in a glorious, upbeat statement.    This piece, completed in 2023, consists of 398 measures, a little over nine minutes in length. There are four changes of key and four changes of time signature. Trumpet 1’s highest note is A above its staff; Trombone’s is F above the staff. Trumpet 2 has a few G-below-its-staff notes.    The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Farewell Celebration (for Brass Quintet)
Brass Quintet: 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158678 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Historic. 30 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758696. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158678). The opening of this 4-minute piece is dance-like, intimating a celebratory mood up front—alone at first, but shared with the ensemble throughout the piece. After much celebration, the piece ends solemnly, as if giving each other final hugs and good-byes. Every Airman has a story to tell. “Farewell Celebration†is part of my story as an Airman musician. It is a fitting farewell to the Heartland of America Band stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska, and to the entire American Midwest, as my family and I finalized our plans to uproot for an extraordinary three-year adventure in Asia. Work on this composition began toward the end of July and beginning of August 2021 as a melody with instructions to be the opening of a brass quintet piece, beginning with trumpet alone. It remained in that state until January 2022 when I entered this sketch into the computer to be worked on sporadically along with several other works in progress. When I contracted Covid-19 in July 2022, all of these works and other incipient pieces received attention, but this one more than most others. In the fall, I felt an urgency to complete it as a sentimental gesture of enthusiastic good-byes due to many life changes taking place. In particular, my fourth son, Paul, was departing for two years for Brazil. I was compelled to complete this work before he left on October 17, 2022, which I accomplished the day prior to his departure. In addition to Paul’s farewell, two co-workers with whom I had worked closely in the Air Force brass quintet called “Offutt Brass,†were also moving on with new exciting chapters in their lives. MSgt Ben Kadow, our fantastic trombonist, had received an assignment to move to Germany, leaving us on November 8. And MSgt Ryan Heseltine, our unparalleled French horn player, retired at the end of the year. On top of all that, in September I was given an assignment to move to Japan the following summer. Some farewells are more difficult to endure than others, though all seem to have varied brands of profound emotion. In contrast to saying good-bye to a loved one who passes away, all of these farewells were joyful, albeit poignant. “Farewell Celebration†is dedicated to my son Paul, to my outstanding professional colleagues, Ben Kadow and Ryan Heseltine, and to all our friends and family members who we left behind as we moved to Japan.

The Peanut Vendor (el Manisero)
Brass Quintet: 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba
Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432
(+)
Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .  Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor†in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.   Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero†(“The Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze†in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).     Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio MachÃn on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.     English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.† One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.    Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor†in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.† “The Peanut Vendor†subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.   This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances†are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances†are still there!)     Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1416368 Composed by Isham Jones. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Pop,Standards,Wedding. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #997935. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1416368). Isham Edgar Jones certainly kept busy. By age 26 the Chicago tenor saxophonist led his own dance band, and it was one of the most popular of the 1920s. But he also found time to write melodies for a whole raft of popular songs. Twenty-one Isham Jones Orchestra recordings of his compositions peaked in the top ten most popular, and eight of those made it to the number one spot. One was It Had to Be You, with words by Gus Kahn.    Although written in 1924, It Had to Be You defies the passage of time, still sounding fresh and contemporary. It remains popular and has evolved into a jazz standard.    This brass quintet version retains the original key of G Major. It opens with a suggested tempo of 104 BPM and a nine-measure introduction that combines figures and phrases from both verse and chorus. At rehearsal letter A, Trumpet 1 begins the melody of the familiar chorus, accompanied by Tuba and Horn in F. Trumpet 2 quickly joins and the melody changes to an upper brass trio. The melody then passes to Trombone, back to the trio, to Tuba and then to Horn in F. The section winds up with the original Trumpet-Horn-Tuba combination.    The seldom-heard verse begins at rehearsal letter C and takes the form of a sort of call-and-response between upper and lower brass. As the section nears its end, tempo slows to a suggested 80 BPM and Trombone begins to take over.    Rehearsal letter D marks the beginning of the chorus’ final time through, and here it is mostly Trombone handling the melody in quasi-Dixieland fashion. The upper brass trio and Tuba both help out, but, for the most part, it is Trombone all the way to the end. (Although, a good time is had by all!)    Performance time is about three minutes, fifty seconds. All notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument with the following exceptions: (1) Trumpet 1 has one or two A-above-its-staff notes, and (2) in the wrap-up near the end, Trombone has the option of playing a short phrase either (a) within its register or (b) higher, including a G above the staff.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Digital Download SKU: A0.1468129 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 19th Century,Chamber,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 49 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church. Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody. Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom. She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart. Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.” Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular. When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind. J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded. In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original. You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences. This composition is 201 measures in length. It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141). Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C. There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing. The introduction is 21 measures in length. It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto. In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression. At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles. The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme. Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds. Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument. The composer, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. As a father, similar memories with my children are among my warmest. This three-and-a-half-minute piece of music aptly tells the title’s story. The excitement leading up to the anticipated day of departure is electric! The opening fanfare-ish intro reflects this buzz well. It is followed by a quirky rhythmic section as “helpful†kids load their poorly packed bags full of unnecessary items awkwardly into the vehicle. The fanfare returns as the family hits the road at last. As the rest of the music unfolds, imagine the alphabet game, off-key songs sung at the top of everyone’s lungs, rest stops (emergency or otherwise), spilled food, car problems, drowsiness, souvenirs, car sickness, and of course ultimate arrival at planned destinations. This soundtrack to a fun part of life can be anyone’s road trip! Work on this composition began on September 19, 2021 as a thoroughly sketched out fanfare in my manuscript notebook during a church youth activity in a park. It remained in that state until I contracted Covid-19 in July 2022 and was confined to a hotel room for a week. There, I entered this sketch into the computer, along with a dozen others. Throughout the summer, all of these works received some attention, but this one more than the rest. Much of the final work on “Road Trip†took place during a trip to Philadelphia.

Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Romantic Period, Graduation, Recital. Score, Set of Parts. 19 pages. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (S0.93391). - Score,Set of Parts - Romantic Period,Graduation,Recital - Sweetwater Brass Press
Mendelssohn?s oratorio ?Athalia? grew out of a commission he had received to write incidental music for a private performance of the French tragedy ?Athalie.? He then went on to expand his original score to include three soloists, full chorus and orchestra, two orators, an overture and the piece presented here. ?War March of the Priests? is one of Mendelssohn?s most performed compositions, one reason being that it goes over so well as both a stand-alone concert piece and as a graduation/commencement processional or recessional. As this arrangement shows, "War March" adapts perfectly to the brass quintet, from the energetic and assertive triplet figures to the complementary legato section: a real gem for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. This arrangement was completed in 2012, and performance time runs about 6 minutes, 42 seconds; however, its repeated sections allow it to be expanded or contracted on the spot to meet the time needs for ceremonial processions. You may contact the arranger, Les Smith, at lessmith@ufl.edu.
