The tune of the song dates from the seventeenth century and is the Regimental Quick March of the Grenadier Guards, the Honourable Artillery Company, and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers1. The song is played during Trooping the Colour, regardless of which regiment is on the parade ground2. The origins of the tune are not known, but it is believed to come from the Dutch martial tune De jonge prins van Friesland or March of the young Prince of Friesland.Here is a concise and cunning version of this effective march.

The simple and easy to play melody is shared between the two trumpets and French horn, while the almost trademark arpeggios are shared across French horn and trombone. With many brass quintet arrangements it is difficult to figure out how to make them sound great. With this particular arrangement, your French horn and trombone will quickly grasp the nuances of weaving the arpeggios together across the two parts. Once the arpeggios come together the trumpets and tuba are likely to be inspired to balance tastefully. Performance time is approximately 1:48. This massive hit by Roy Orbison and Bill Dees has been carefully arranged for Brass Quintet (2 Trumpets, Horn in F, Trombone/Euphonium and Tuba) plus optional percussion. Parts are also included for common brass band variations e.g. Tenor Horn in Eb, Trombone/Euphonium in treble and bass clef, and Eb/Bb Bass in treble clef. With school and amateur ensembles in mind, this arrangement is designed for intermediate players and above.  Percussion (Drum Kit or Cajon) can be added for additional colour if desired, but is not essential for a convincing performance.  The music is faithful in spirit to the original, with everyone having their moments in the spotlight as themes are shared by the players across the ensemble.  The PDF is 26 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a score and parts plus optional percussion, with additional parts as described above to allow substitution where required for non standard ensembles. The duration of the piece is about 2.20 minutes.  Look out for other instrumental versions by the same publisher for Saxophone, Clarinet and Wind Quintets.

Wild Loch Mountain Lomond Thyme, originally written as a ten-piece for Castle Brass, is the result of a discovery that two traditional Scottish folk tunes fit pretty well over the top of each other. Both Loch Lomond and Wild Mountain Thyme are beautiful tunes in their own right, and I've tried to preserve that while bringing something new to the table. This piece would be an excellent addition to any quintet's concert programme.The first trumpet part of this version of the piece has an option to play the opening and closing passages on a flugelhorn for a more mellow colour, although this is optional.
