NOTES on The Waiting GameWaiting is hard.The Waiting Game is a three-movement work for brass quintet depicting three different emotional scenarios one might endure while waiting for something good to happen. The Waiting Game can be applied to various situations in life where there is no control over the timing of an event and one must simply wait for it to unfold. The first movement, “Anticipationâ€, the first phase, takes the listener through the ambivalent feelings of both dread and positivity depending on the day. The 2nd movement, “Exaspirationâ€, is slow and expressive, representing time dragging on. This is the most frustrating period of the waiting process. From the Shadow's Edge was commissioned by horn player in the US Air Force Bands, SSgt Alena Zidlicky, to honor her grandmother Beluse Urlich Zidlicky (Babi), who escaped the oppressive Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during WWII. For brass quintet and percussion, the horn is featured. The music of this composition begins in aural darkness, as if immersed in an inescapable shadow. The tense harmonies and contrapuntal motions of the brass are accompanied by two heartbeat motifs, in the tuba and bass drum, conjuring sentiments of fear and uncertainty. Emotions swell as the solo horn enters with contrasting triplet rhythms that struggle against the complex mixture of duple strains throughout the other parts. This dark introduction serves as a prelude to the above storyline, which transitions quickly (and trepidatiously) out of the shadow. From rehearsal letter B through the remainder of the piece, hope permeates in the brightness, once escaped from the shadow’s ominous edge. The complex nature of the thematic overlapping and polyphonic texture of the quintet as a whole provide feelings of unrest, anticipation, hope, and yes, heroism. Nothing exudes heroism more than a soaring solo horn! This composition celebrates triumph over evil, whether during life or in death, and those who press on with a brightness of hope even in the darkest shadows that life can cast, as exemplified in the life of Beluse Ulrich Zidlicky.

The Spanish War had a profound effect on Sousa, as did military life, evidenced in his march titles. Sousa is quoted as saying “A composition in march tempo must have the military instinct, and that is one reason why so few of the great composers have written successful marches. They lived in an atmosphere of peace. The roll of musketry had no meaning for them, so that quality is entirely absent from their work. The Spanish War was an inspiration to me. “The Man Behind the Gun†was a musical echo of it.â€Â This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Man Behind the Gun was composed in 1899, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 57.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

Elgar dedicated it to his friend, the author, and critic George Bernard Shaw. Some critics consider the Severn Suite to be Elgar’s best work in his later years, arguing that is a neglected masterpiece. The work is very Elgarian in the high Romantic style. It is fine music originally composed for brass by a famous acknowledged master that will be enjoyable for players and audiences alike.The duration of the full piece is around 16:30 and includes five movements, that follow each other without breaks: 1) Introduction (Worcester Castle) – Pomposo (2:10), 2) Toccata (the Tournament Grounds) - Allegro molto (4:20), 3) Fugue (The Cathedral) – Andante (3:00), 4) Minuet (in the Commandery) (5:00) – Moderato, and 5) Coda - Lento – Pomposo (2:00). Higher Ground (I'm pressing on the upward way) is a 19th-century American gospel song with lyrics by Johnson Oatman, Jr. (1856-1922) and music by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856-1932).Both Oatman and Gabriel were prolific writers. Oatman, an ordained Methodist Episcopal minister employed primarily in retail and insurance work, is said to have written over 5,000 hymns and songs in the latter 30-some years of his life.  Although not a talented singer nor recognized as an outstanding preacher, he was acknowledged to have ministered to countless souls through the words of his hymns and songs.Gabriel, a Methodist Episcopal church music director and editor of gospel song books, anthem collections, music instruction manuals, and more, is said to have written between seven and eight thousand texts and/or tunes under his own name and several pseudonyms. In addition to the music for Higher Ground, he composed the music for such well-known gospel songs as His Eye is on the Sparrow and Will the Circle Be Unbroken? The opening line of Oatman’s text (I'm pressing on the upward way) draws especially from Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.†Other sources include passages from the prophets Isaiah and Micah and the Psalms of Ascent (120-134). Gabriel's music cleverly evokes the upward vision of the text with an ascending arpeggio spanning an octave on the first words of the refrain (Lord, lift me up) and the matching of the highest notes of the tune to the words a higher plane.This arrangement for brass quintet expands the meter of the tune from 3/4 to 4/4 to allow for some countermelodic call-and-response by various voices in the ensemble. Three selections based on Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ lay in death's bonds) (from Cantata No.  4, BMV  4) - Johann Sebastian Bach - Euphonium Quintet (Bass Clef) - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download.Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, Christ lag in Todesbanden (also spelled Todes Banden) (Christ lay in death's bonds) is a cantata for Easter written by Johann Sebastian Bach and is his earliest surviving Church Cantata. It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism. Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement is more complex than the previous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.  4, a straightforward four-part chorale setting of the hymn. (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Little Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist at Weimar. For the final selection, Regis has placed the polyphonic and imitative chorus, Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen (It was a strange battle, that death and life waged), which Bach had placed in the middle of his Cantata No.  4.This arrangement is for a Euphonium Quintet, written in Bass Clef. There is also a version written in Treble Clef, if you would prefer.Included are a score and a complete set of parts (29 pages).I hope you will enjoy playing these selections and please search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar.
