An arrangement of the Åland Islands National Song (Song of the Ålander - Ålänningens sång) for Brass Quintet.Ålänningens sång (English: Song of the Ålander; Finnish: Ahvenanmaalaisten laulu), is the official anthem of the Åland Islands, an autonomous Swedish-speaking province of Finland. Adopted in 1922, the anthem's words are by John Grandell and the music was composed by Johan Fridolf Hagfors. The song was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn 1922. In Åland the song is mostly sung on Midsummer's Eve and on the National day of Åland in June 9th. The song originally had four verses, but the third verse is omitted for a long time when the song is sung and often when it appears in print.Johan Fridolf Hagfors (11 March 1857–18 August 1931) was a Swedish newspaper publisher, music critic and composer, most known for having composed the two songs Modersmålets sång (The mother tongue's song) and Ålänningens sång (Song of the Ålender).Born in Orimattila, he got a Cand.phil degree in 1881. In 1883 he became publicist of the small Åbo paper Turun Lehti which was published in Finnish but at the same time Svecoman; it became the only newspaper with that combination to reach a wide readership. He also worked as a teacher in Åbo.He composed several songs for male quartets. Modersmålets sång was first performed in 1989 and is today considered an unofficial hymn for the Swedish-speaking population of Finland. Ålänningens sång, for which he composed the melody, was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn in 1922 and is today the regional hymn for the Åland islands.In 1912 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.Due to stiff competition, Turun Lehti ceased publication in 1919. Hagfors subsequently moved to Stockholm and obtained Swedish citizenship. He died in 1931. Set to a traditional 16th-17th century Irish tune, the Irish Carol (Christmas Day is Come) is attributed to Luke Wadding (1558-1657), a Franciscan friar and historian born in Ireland who did much to strengthen the Catholic Church in Ireland and raise its profile in Rome. Although he was a prolific writer who published his own Small Garland of Pious and Godly Songs (1684), the so-called Irish Carol appeared in A New Garland Containing Songs for Christmas by William Devereux (1696-1771) as The Second Carol for Christmas Day. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1147711). “The Huron Carol†is the popular name for a Christmas song written in the language of the Wendat, an indigenous people of Canada — their name meaning “people of the island†or “dwellers on a peninsula†— nicknamed “Huron†(“boar's headâ€) by French explorers and traders due to the bristly hairstyle of Wendat men.The song began as a tool for teaching and converting the Wendat to Christianity, and it was likely written in the early 1640s by the French Jesuit missionary, Jean de Brébeuf. In Wendat, the song is titled “Jesous Ahatonnia,†which means “Jesus is Born.†The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, “Une Jeune Pucelle†(“A Young Maidâ€). Jean de Brébeuf’s lyrics present the Nativity story using images and ideas that would have been familiar to the Wendat. Angels are “spirits†and “sky peopleâ€; the Magi (wise men) are “elders,†and as an act of reverence they oil Jesus’ scalp, a practice Wendat people would have recognized. Today, “The Huron Carol's†most well-known lyrics, beginning “'Twas in the moon of winter-time,†were written by Canadian poet Jesse Middleton and published in 1927 in a small illustrated book titled “The First Canadian Christmas Carol.â€Middleton’s text is not a translation, but a complete rewriting of “Jesous Ahatonnia†for English speakers, and bears almost no relation to the original Wendat text. Middleton relied on stereotypes, critics say, painting a picture of an indigenous Nativity in a “lodge of broken bark,†with “hunter braves†replacing shepherds, and “gifts of fur and beaver pelt†delivered by “chiefs from far.†Still, the carol has long been popular, perhaps in part due to its refrain, “Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born. Flight of the Bumblebee is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 1899–1900. Its composition is intended to musically evoke the seemingly chaotic and rapidly changing flying pattern of a bumblebee. Despite the piece's being a rather incidental part of the opera, it is today one of the more familiar classical works because of its frequent use in popular culture. The piece closes Act III, Tableau 1, during which the magic Swan-Bird changes Prince Gvidon Saltanovich (the Tsar's son) into an insect so that he can fly away to visit his father (who does not know that he is alive). The duration of this is 2.07 minutes and it is a difficult level piece.

At a young age, he showed musical talent and became a pupil of Lowell Mason, an influential educator and composer who was instrumental in developing music education in the United States. Smith was also a prolific composer and wrote over 500 works, including hymns, songs, anthems, and instrumental music. Many of his hymns are still sung today in churches across the country, including Rejoice in the Lord Always, and Sabbath Bells are Ringing. In addition to his work as a composer, Smith was also an accomplished organist and held positions at several churches throughout his career, including in Boston and New York City.Smith was a supporter of music education and was influential in developing the music program at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he taught for several years. He was also a member of the Boston Academy of Music and served as its president from 1852 to 1856.Henry Smith died on October 2, 1879, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 66. His contributions to American music, particularly within the realm of religious music, were significant and helped shape the development of American classical music.
