The song is not originally written for birthday celebrations. Two sisters Patty and Mildred J. Hill were Kindergarten teachers in Kentucky and they began to greet their students with the song called “Good Morning To All†in their kindergarten classes. This greeting song was loved by their students and the sisters later published the tune in their song book “Song Stories for Kindergartenâ€. But the “Happy Birthday to You†version of the song which we know today is first appeared in 1912 later published in a song book by Robert Coleman in 1924.

Ode to Jane is an intermediate level classical guitar solo, composed by Bradley Powell, in honor of Dame Jane Goodall's 90th birthday celebration (4/3/24). Dr. Jane Goodall is a world-famous primatologist and anthropologist, considered the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees. She has changed the world with her studies, and continues to do so with environmental and educational activism.  Brad Powell met Dr. Goodall in the early 1990s, and has composed this piece in her honor.  It is a relaxing waltz style, using intermediate-level classical guitar technique, with both folk and modern jazz guitar chord voicings. This is in STANDARD NOTATION WITH TAB. (A version in standard notation without TAB is also available separately.)ABOUT the composer: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. It's actually a bit more difficult than the original--because the swung melody and bass lines are syncopated rather than matched... but it is very cool and fun to play, and a great showpiece for an intermediate level guitarist! This arrangement involved careful editing of essential elements of the Cello Suite Prelude (not the entire piece), tuning the guitar's 5th and 6th strings down a whole step, and adjusting harmonies of the Cello Suite to match Happy Birthday, still retaining Bach's compositional style.  It's an intermediate level classical fingerstyle, similar in difficulty to the Sor Etudes. It was recorded in January 2003 at Sony Studios in New York City, and was released by Blue Note Records later that year. On the album, Martino is joined by saxophonist Joe Lovano, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Lewis Nash.Think Tank received a 2003 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, and Africa was nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.Think Tank , as the name suggests, finds Martino at his most cerebral, which has its pros and cons. The title track, for example, is a blues of sorts built on an equation based on the letters of John Coltrane's name, which may sound like an exercise for a composition class, but manages to hold together pretty well organically. Coltrane, a Philadelphia mentor of Martino's, is a recurring reference on the album, both indirectly in Martino's intensely spiritual and intellectual approach to the music, and directly on the funk-based original Phineas Trane as well as on an extended romp through Coltrane's Africa.

Bach (1685-1750) wrote a series of 24 compositions, one for each major and minor key, and he called it “The Well Tempered Clavier,†which was a keyboard type instrument. The “Prelude in C†has been transcribed by a number of people for classical guitar.  It is basically a beautiful chord progression with a picking pattern.  About 110 years later the French composer, Charles Gounod, added a melody to it and called it “Ave Maria.†It became known as the “Bach-Gounod Ave Maria,†and you can often hear it played as a duet for flute and piano. Tarrega actually transcribed it for classical guitar in the late 1800s but you would need virtuoso skills to play it. As playability is always a priority in my arrangements I made some compromises.I kept the melody and chord progression and, to the extent I could, the bass notes.  But the voicing, those notes between the bass and melody that were real important to Bach, I just let fall where they may and used common guitar chord forms.The end result Is beautiful, recognizable, and quite playable.
