LOCAL HERO - WILD THEME - 2 GUITARS Performance Version Primarily for classical guitar but also suits acoustic or electric guitars.Derek Hasted writes Rightly described as an astonishingly beautiful piece, this music from the film Local Hero actually features twice on the soundtrack album, in different keys with different solo instruments.My arrangement for classical guitar exploits the soft tones of the nylon strings and works well at a slightly more modest pace compared to the original. I’ve taken the theme from the closing soundtrack version, where the melody is clear and powerful. Each player takes the lead part in turn, and my arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopfler’s quasi-improvised variations on the tune.There’s left hand fingering in a few places where the accompaniment is only comfortable in one position. There are no dynamics, but the changing texture of the accompaniment creates the illusion of dynamic changes and you are welcome to add phrasing and dynamics to make the performance “yoursâ€.This enjoyable concert item has a wonderfully captivating melody that the audience will be humming all the way home...My duet arrangement comes in 2 formats... This one is a performance version (in which the workload is shared equally and there’s an effortless switching of parts in the middle), set in score only, for two advanced intermediate players.A separate arrangement (for student and teacher) comprises a student melody line (set in score and score+tab) and an arpeggio teacher's accompaniment, set in score only.The student line is early intermediate, and the teacher's part is advanced intermediate.To find the other version easily, visit my website (below) and look for my list of guitar duets.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Both will be familiar to many guitarists as they have featured over the years in a number of Graded Examinations.The countermelody is a new addition, which I originally wrote for flute, so that the piece slotted seamlessly into the background music I played with my flute partner at a friend’s wedding.The Tanz is often mistakenly translated as Dance of the Washerwoman, and it’s also known as Wascha Mesa. The Hupfauf is a companion piece, set in a different rhythm but with ostensibly the same harmonic structure (apart from the Tanz’s Coda which is absent from the Hupfauf).Each dance has two beats in the bar, and the two dances can flow into each other or can be played with a short break. When they run into each other, it makes sense to maintain the two-beat pulse, but if this makes the Hupfauf stressful to play, one can maintain instead the value of the half note (minim), so that the Hupfauf proceeds at a more modest pace.You can play the whole piece (each player plays tune and countermelody in turn), or you can shorten the piece by omitting the sections starting at A and B, which also makes the piece ideal for a mixed ability duo, as one player keeps the tune and one keeps the countermelody.Feel free to add dynamics, a little more articulation and possibly some tone color changes.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME (Oliver) - GUITAR DUETFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.This poignant yet uplifting piece is from the stage show & film Oliver and is another fine example of Lionel Bart's craftsmanship with melody.Derek Hasted writes This makes a delightful 'quiet piece' in a concert - many of the audience will know the music and my arrangement has been crafted to make an accessible duet that generates rich chords without complexity - the work is split across the players.The first guitar part goes high up the neck, but the music is slow and the shapes are straightforward. The second guitar part requires the 6th string to be tuned down to D and there are a couple of chords that require three fingers to be placed simultaneously, but there are lots of open strings throughout the piece that help improve the sustain and flow. The bottom D provides real depth to this piece and the sound is full and lush for minimal effort. Audiences equate effortless with easy, but it can be a bit of a beast to play well.Why this arrangement?I’ve lowered the key by one tone which makes many of the chords sound more mellow.I’ve fixed the ungainly jumps in the bass line which came as a constraint of playing up the neck on solo guitar.I’ve improved the connectivity of the middle voices from chord to chord so the chord changes sound more effortless and natural.A side effect is that everything is easier and the sustain seems more effortless.My duet arrangement comes in 2 formats... This one is a performance version (in which the workload is shared equally and there’s a truly effortless switching of parts in the middle), set in score only for two intermediate players.A separate one (for student and teacher) comprises a melody line and an arpeggio accompaniment, set in both score and score+tab.
