I especially liked Chick's music when he used a lot of instruments in his music. This song has woodwind, brass, and strings along with his combo. The Leprechaun's Dream is the finale to the masterful LP. It is an epic tune with different keys, dynamics, key signatures and tempos. His wife, Gayle Moran, did the vocals on this piece. ON THE BUS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2001 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is one of the first pieces I composed and arranged for big band and is based on the chord changes of Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite. I composed the tune in the late 1980's when, as a student, I was listening to a lot of Bird and Miles and spending a lot of time catching buses! The original arrangement was done for the Queensland Youth Big Band and has been somewhat revised for this version. The head features an Alto Sax 1/Trumpet 2 soli supported with some rhythmic and melodic stabs from the ensemble. Space is provided in the chart for solos from Alto Sax1, Trumpet 2 and Piano. The chorus beginning at measure 75 features a brass section unison soli passage, composed of some of my favourite Bird and Miles licks. This provides a challenge for the brass players to keep this section tight and swinging. Fully notated rhythm section parts have been included to assist less experienced players. I hope you enjoy performing this chart!

Jazz Ensemble - in the style of a Blues March - opens with a straight cadence by the rhythm and trombone sections. The first chorus features the baritone sax, bass trombone and bass, which are joined in the second chorus by the full trombone section. An optionally open solo section beginning at 2:09 provides opportunity for several players to stretch. A low trombone and sax background riff during the solo section builds to a full ensemble chorus at 2:36 based on the riff. Following is a swinging trumpet soli. The low voices return to lead the march to the end. NOTE: The audio sample was produced with Finale. Some techniques like falls are omitted when results are unsatisfactory. Look for more arrangements by Roger Wallace.

Chism, Sr. #852705. Published by Rodney D. Chism, Sr. (A0.1259418). The Plaza is a low 12/8 feel down-to-earth Mississippi Delta style blues. Great solo vehicle for a blues guitarist. A strong ensemble shout chorus that will bring down the house. It is very playable. Solos - Guitar, Tenor Saxophone, muted Trumpet/Flugelhorn (or just open it up). This composition was written for Nolan Ryan Henderson, a student murdered in Mississippi. It begins with a drum build-up and a strong beginning. Letter A is written for a Guitar solo to go to town. The Saxophone part will be played as background for the last time. Letters B and C are full band sections. Trumpets with shakes, Trombones with slide falls throughout, and a Saxophone Soli at letter C leading up to letter D, the open solo section.Letter D is the open solo section for any instrument let freedom ring. The ensemble backgrounds are to be played every even number of repeated cycles or the last time. Allow the Guitarist to close it out by going into the shout section of the letter E.Letter E is the famous riff until the next, the last measure with the railroad tracks. At the pause, allow the lead soloist or the drummer to work until the last note is cued. If the spirit is still high, the final note can be played with directed quarter note hits leading back to the 5th measure of letter E (shout section). Play it straight to the end with no railroad tracks during this time.

The term Matanzas in Spanish means massacre as many of the slaves who were transported to Cuba never got there from their harsh treatment by their captors and the horrible conditions of the ship they were being transported. Manny also uses Afro-beat a rhythm not used by only familiar with it. The rhythm and the minor key Manny uses created a very mysterious and haunting feel. From that feel, he then moves into Afro-Cuban Son to brighten the sadness at the beginning of the song. For your percussionist performing this song, care must be taken to play exactly what is written or your song won't have the correct feeling and impact on your listening audience!
