This hard swinging, up tempo arrangement is written in the style of the Count Basie Orchestra.  It starts out small with a Piano solo and builds throughout with additional solos in the Trumpet, Tenor Sax, and Trombone. This is the traditional baseball theme (Take Me Out to the Ballgame) set in an energetic jazz band swing chart. After a brief intro to lay it down, the melody starts in a lazy swing tempo with a lilting alto solo (a-la street player in front of the park) and soon builds to a full ensemble shout then a lively up-tempo accentuated by energetic interjections. There is an open solo section before the head is repeated with a typical Tin-Pan-Alley ending. Logical rehearsal marks and generous technique items make rehearsal a snap! Ossia notes (lead trumpet) are included for developing / younger artists. This is a super-duper exciting and moderately challenging chart which really showcases your band and the jazz band at its very finest. The included MIDI playback file here is taken from the original layout in an effort to show the most accurate portrayal of this arrangement.

Published by Mike Dana Music (A0.1472109). About the piece: Welcome to the second chart I’ve done on a Beatles tune! I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308790). *THIS ACCOMPANIES THE VOCAL ARRANGEMENT* This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

A solo sheet is also available which breaks down the solo chords from 179-203 for C, Bb and Eb instruments. Each horn section is featured at times during the piece and there is an open improvisation section for the full band.The theme is centred around a 9 note motive and is set over a diminished 7th chord progression. Starting off in a funk style, driven by the bass, the piece moves into a half-time feel featuring a wailing alto sax and saxophone section feature, moving into an energetic samba that descends into chaos, before a driving swing style finishes the piece off.Originally composed for the Kool Skools album competition during my time at Blackburn High School, this piece was given new life and three more movements during a recording project by the Blackburn Big Band, made up of alumni of the HS.
