The main rhythmic figure of the piece is altered and is heard in the trombones and drums, particularly in the tom-toms and floor tom. With this piece being longer and more involved, this could be played by more advanced and experienced musicians in professional-level orchestras. It is possible that this could be performed by any college jazz ensemble, but would involve more time to practice and rehearse. Anyone familiar with the original compostion should not have a problem trying to learn and practice this arrangement.

Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979627). New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. This work was originally composed for choir by Bernadette Debattista and was first performed at the Dawn Service, commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, in ANZAC Cove on 25 April 2015 by a combined choir from St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows’ School. This extended work sees the original theme recomposed for big band and choir. It may be performed in its entirety or the third movement may be omitted (or presented as spoken word only) if a choir is not available. The sax section requires the following doubles: Clarinet for Alto Saxes 1 and 2, and Tenor Sax 2; Flute for Tenor Sax 1; Bassoon for Bari Sax (although a Bari Sax part with no doubles has been included). There is also an optional part for Eb Sarrusophone! Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised. TWO FROM SEVEN for Big Band- This piece is a re-thinking of the second movement from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony Op. 92 written in 1811. Beethoven commented that he thought it was one of his best works. The orchestral version has been used numerous times for numerous purposes. One of the more recent uses was in the 2011 film THE KING’S SPEECH. It is a slow burn style piece. It starts small with a relentless rhythmic and harmonic ostinato that builds and builds to a big band shout chorus. There is a trumpet solo indicated, but the solo could be played by any member of the band. There are optional parts for vibes and tuba. The work is not overly difficult and could be mastered by a high school band with little effort. Paramount to a good performance is articulation and dynamics. Also, the blending of muted brass with saxophones should be considered. There are no doublings. Leade Tpt C6 (D6 opt.)

Each horn section is featured at times during the piece and there is an open improvisation section for the full band.The theme is centred around a 9 note motive and is set over a diminished 7th chord progression. Starting off in a funk style, driven by the bass, the piece moves into a half-time feel featuring a wailing alto sax and saxophone section feature, moving into an energetic samba that descends into chaos, before a driving swing style finishes the piece off.Originally composed for the Kool Skools album competition during my time at Blackburn High School, this piece was given new life and three more movements during a recording project by the Blackburn Big Band, made up of alumni of the HS.
