Chism, Sr. #852705. Published by Rodney D. Chism, Sr. (A0.1259418). The Plaza is a low 12/8 feel down-to-earth Mississippi Delta style blues. Great solo vehicle for a blues guitarist. A strong ensemble shout chorus that will bring down the house. It is very playable. Solos - Guitar, Tenor Saxophone, muted Trumpet/Flugelhorn (or just open it up). This composition was written for Nolan Ryan Henderson, a student murdered in Mississippi. It begins with a drum build-up and a strong beginning. Letter A is written for a Guitar solo to go to town. The Saxophone part will be played as background for the last time. Letters B and C are full band sections. Trumpets with shakes, Trombones with slide falls throughout, and a Saxophone Soli at letter C leading up to letter D, the open solo section.Letter D is the open solo section for any instrument let freedom ring. The ensemble backgrounds are to be played every even number of repeated cycles or the last time. Allow the Guitarist to close it out by going into the shout section of the letter E.Letter E is the famous riff until the next, the last measure with the railroad tracks. At the pause, allow the lead soloist or the drummer to work until the last note is cued. If the spirit is still high, the final note can be played with directed quarter note hits leading back to the 5th measure of letter E (shout section). Play it straight to the end with no railroad tracks during this time.

Neil Peart asked me to arrange “YYZ†for the 2008 Buddy Rich Memorial Concert in New York City. Knowing “Rush†fans would be in attendance and super tuned into the chart, we discussed some key moments in the composition that should remain true to the original and those where I could take some license. Like many of my arrangements for Buddy Rich, this is a “high energy†chart that is a real crowd pleaser with plenty of space to open it up for the drums and bass to be featured. Almost any instrument can be substituted for the soprano solo. The chart is very challenging and a strong trumpet section is important as is a really tight rhythm section. Alto 1 plays soprano sax throughout and the configuration is 5 Saxes, 4 Trumpets, 3 Trombones (3rd is Bass), Guitar (optional) Electric Keyboard, Bass & Drums.

(A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). What if Benny Carter had not sailed for Europe in 1935 to become staff arranger with the BBC, but instead had helped out Benny Goodman with providing scores for his ‘Let’s Dance’ program? And suppose Carter had done the same trick that Fletcher Henderson pulled later on, e.g. adapting already existing scores of his own band for the Benny Goodman Orchestra? Carter’s ‘Symphony In Riffs’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. The sax soli written by Carter is there, but the clarinet dominates the second strain in a Glenn Miller-styled section, and of course later with an extended solo. Other soloists include trb 1, piano, tpt 2 and ts 1. The two different strains are juxtaposed to each other, to make for a maximum of variety. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Difficult for multiple reasons: • The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’. Fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. • Strong lead-alto required, with an old-skool ‘singing’ tone. • Lead trumpet must be able to ‘carry off’ the final section from bar 197 onwards. • Driving rhythm section needed; swinging (preferably acoustic) rhythm guitarist and a bassist who doesn’t shy away from playing compelling bass-lines. If your band meets these requirements: have fun!

Published by John Philips Music Service (A0.947269). Set the tempo for about 90. This is a trumpet/fluegelhorn feature ballad that requires a strong lyrical soloist that can play in tune. It is very pretty, not difficult but must be played as is to work. First chorus is solo, second chorus first half ensemble, bridge is trumpet solo in front of brass section, last 8 modulates up for a big finish. Appropriate for a working band or a good high school or college band. Dedicated to Randy Brooks. Solo part has more than eighth notes but tempo is slow.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

The piece opens with a strong rhythmic figure played by the entire band based on quartal harmony. Then the main melody enters in a soli passage for the saxes. Ist trumpet must be able to hit a Bb above the staff on this one. Room for solos is provided. It would make a great addition to any program. After teaching music in the PA public schools for over thirty years I found that there were never enough good quality, accessible arrangements available. Hopefully this piece will help remedy that situation. This is an original arrangement for a jazz/swing band with standard instrumentation (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section).See all of my arrangements here

Mostly That is a lead sheet written in RealBook style, which can be played in many settings by a soloist or other jazz combo. It has a 24 bar form, fusion feel and sounds great with a strong back-beat behind its 3/4 time. I chose the key of E Major so that the 6 string guitar could utilize the lowest of its open strings tuned to standard tuning. It really opens up the fret-board. The chord-changes and melody break away from the key slightly at times, to create some dissonance and fluctuation. The solos section evokes blues and a bit of grit with the use of the dominant #9 and flat9. Play the solos with intention and vigor. The title was inspired by a brief conversation I had with a stranger in New York City. I was asked a rather broad question and didn't have a response so I said, Mostly That. For the trumpet solo which is transcribed per the CD, each section in the big band play significant roles in providing lots of interest to play off of as a soloist. The ensemble enters with a stronger statement that builds to the head.The guitar plays the A section of the head in octave or single notes. The bridges section swings as a single eighth note guitar line. The background starts with the sax section followed with counterpoint between the trumpet and trombone sections.The second time through the form, Tenor Sax 1 solos over the first half changes and background. The guitar takes over solo on the last half of the form which leads into an echo of the intro and builds up to the shout chorus.The shout builds to a melodic trumpet high D followed by an obvious quotation by the ensemble. Repetition of the ensemble intro with a main theme fragment is followed by brass pyramids and a final theme stinger to close out the piece. 160 bpm per quarter note is a suggested tempo but the piece can be taken faster for more excitement and energy. The piece is written in 4/4 for the swing bridge section. The samba sections should be felt in 2/2 with the accent on the 2. The quarter note always stays the same.
