It's a simple blues in Concert F (despite the key signature where I've added that flatted seventh!) and is a great vehicle for developing young soloists - or pushing those with more experience to new highs! The mp3 is just a MuseScore3 export, nothing fancy, but it gives you an idea of what to expect. I've not included any solos, making this a good mp3 to give to your soloists to play along with. It's not too tough, should be playable by many advanced grade school and all high school bands - and it's scored to sound good even with pro groups.

The Trumpet Section takes the lead after the opening piano solo. The B section introduces the Saxophone and Trombone Sections supporting the Trumpets' lead with backgrounds. The C section brings a killer Saxophone soli before the solo section. The D section is an open solo section for the Saxophone section and can be repeated multiple times. The E and F sections bring in a (E) Trumpet soli and Trombone soli (F) as backgrounds while the Saxophonists are trading 8s until the last four measures of the F section, and they all will play the changes.The G section is a tutti for the ensemble as the rhythm section continues to play the changes with the last measures of the drummer setting up the conclusion to end the piece.

This tune is an Opus 1, as an introduction into UNC's storied jazz program. It was premiered November 5th, 2019 at UNC's University Center. This chart features alto, tenor, and bass solos throughout the chart as well as acapella sax and brass sections as well. Rooftop accents are meant to be kept fat and unclipped. It is important to keep musical momentum in acapella sections, as to keep the time with a lack of rhythm section. This is a fun one for the whole band! I hope you enjoy!

Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in lead sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. (NOTE: A Bb leadsheet is also available.) The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track features Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). My mom wrote this poem in 2007 when she was going through chemotherapy to treat her breast cancer. She was reminiscing about a day when her grandsons Ian (7) and Zachary (4) had accompanied her with bongo drums, maracas and tambourines as she played her Yamaha Clavinova to a latin beat. She said it was so much fun and they had such a good time! From her poem I have created a song that tries to capture the essence of their experience. I incorporated little variations of When the Saints go Marching in to portray their jam session while also alluding to my mom as a Saint who will always be with us in spirit no matter what. When she marches into Heaven I am sure she will be asking Jesus what he wants for dinner. :) For every purchase of this song I will donate $1 to Breast Cancer Charities of America.

On the re-statement of the melody the full band enters along side the sax section harmonizing the melody with the solo trumpet supported and followed by the trombone, trumpets and sax section adding accents and lines that set up a hard driving swinging style for the trumpet solo. This all leads into the sax section taking it alone on a journey of its own. The trumpet solo rejoins the fun with the sax section restating the line and they all leave the room with a little piece of the action. The trumpet Solo per the CD is transcribed.

Somthin’ We Did - from the CD SAZZUNK, is a Jazz waltz that opens with a series of graduated contrapuntal building lines and accents that arrive at that special place we call the melody or head. The simplistic message in the melody is contrasted and supported by all the other players in the band, those would be the other things “They Did† and there is plenty. For the trumpet solo which is transcribed per the CD, each section in the big band play significant roles in providing lots of interest to play off of as a soloist. After restating the melody in the trumpets and saxes with some variation, the composition wraps it up with a unison line at the end to finish strong!
