There is a notated vocal part as well as a lyric sheet if that would be preferred.There is a full transposed score.The arrangement is very much constructed around the vocals, and would suit any singer or singers who want to perform the Gloria Gaynor single version very much as is. In place of the fade ending there is a double chorus with a short tag on cue.

Your kids will be playing this tune a lot in the band room!Whenever chord symbols are present, bass players can make up their own bass lines and guitarists/pianists their own voicings. This chart's slow tempo and familiar harmonic structure can provide young players with a bridge to developing their own improvised bass lines and comping skills.The plunger work in the beginning is fun, but not required (in case you don't trust middle school students with plungers :))If your rhythm section players need easier or harder parts, let me know and I'm happy to provide.Feel free to add additional soloists if desired. Published by John Allison (A0.1313687). Although this holiday favourite is usually heard as a waltz, this arrangement for Big Band is set in up-tempo 4/4 swing time. Written with amateur big bands in mind, there is enough to ensure experienced adult musicians have fun without being burdened by too many technical difficulties.A high impact tutti introduction is followed by an understated exposition of the tune on the piano in the style of Count Basie. Muted trumpets are then accompanied by the trombones and sax. The short bridge is led by the saxophones before the trombones restate the theme. The middle section is open for solos with backing to be played second time only. After the solos we modulate from Bb to F for an invigorating shout chorus which maintains maximum energy through the brief coda.Your audience will be especially happy to hear the piece around Christmas time, but it can be played as a lively feelgood tune at any time of the year.

Published by John Philips Music Service (A0.947278). This is an alto sax feature ballad. The melody is full and rich and could make you think of Johnny Hodges. First bridge is alto 1 & 2 in unison...with solo alto out front and alto 2 in section it gets a nice echo effect--Last 8 back to alto 1 solo. First half of second chorus has a band within a band over background. Solo part has a few notes past an eighth.Last bridge trombones then alto solo last 8. Ending is very dramatic with some interesting alto work..the very last note is held over the band....like Harlem Nocturne. Not too fast.Don’t let the last note scare you, look at your fingering chart or play it 8va lower. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

If, like me, you’re always looking for a new sound for your festive season concert, want to move away from the usual catalog of songs we hear every year, then Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas could be a good choice. The simplicity of this song sung by Carla Thomas in the early 1960s has been reproduced here in this easy big band arrangement in the original key.The lines played by strings in the original song work well here on the saxes. Trumpets and trombones reinforce the rhythmic patterns. A new melodic phrase derived from the song itself and played by the saxes replaces the introductory two-measure vamp of the original. This complementary melodic line is heard again during the piece and is repeated an octave higher by the trumpets in a brief interlude between the bridge and the third verse. The fade-out ending of the original has been replaced here by an open section with solos cued in alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet (or flugel horn), trombone, guitar and piano. Alternatively, your vocalist can improvise over these four measures or maybe alternate with a soloist. However, this four-measure section is optional; you could just skip to the last two measures.

Frederick #647994. Published by P. R. Frederick (A0.1043304). Burn is a hard driving funk style chart scored for jazz band. At a tempo of 130 beats per minute it really does burn. The piece opens with a strong rhythmic figure played by the entire band based on quartal harmony. Then the main melody enters in a soli passage for the saxes. Ist trumpet must be able to hit a Bb above the staff on this one. Room for solos is provided. It would make a great addition to any program. After teaching music in the PA public schools for over thirty years I found that there were never enough good quality, accessible arrangements available. Hopefully this piece will help remedy that situation. This is an original arrangement for a jazz/swing band with standard instrumentation (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section).See all of my arrangements here
