D’oh! is as much about word play as it is about the rhythmic melody that uses the solfeggio syllables “mi†and “do†to create a clever musical pun and a tongue-in-cheek expression that reflects a disgruntled response to a sharp and accusative question.  Molded to the swing era this work echoes the style of Glenn Miller as it highlights the good-natured jazzy banter between these musical syllables, emphasizing the different features inherent in each section of the ensemble at different times in the music.  With its compelling momentum, Me? D’oh! is a snappy and light-hearted jazz piece that affords a great opportunity for young ensembles to play more individualized parts and build confidence in playing in the style of the great swing era bands of the 1920s and 1930s.

After a maestoso rendition of the first verse by the brass section, the drums set up the tempo into a tour de force medium fast tempo tune influenced by Duke Jordan's Jordu (recorded by the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet) & Bobby Timmons's Moanin' (recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) that while retaining much of the original tune (verse, refrain & bridge) brings out a distinctive hard bop-influenced twist coupled with solos by tenor sax & drums as well as a powerful soli by the trumpet section and a shout chorus moment by the full band. This chart is perfect as a concert opener, anchorer or closer, and it's another good twist of the saying something old, something new in a refreshing way. TWO FROM SEVEN for Big Band- This piece is a re-thinking of the second movement from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony Op. 92 written in 1811. Beethoven commented that he thought it was one of his best works. The orchestral version has been used numerous times for numerous purposes. One of the more recent uses was in the 2011 film THE KING’S SPEECH. It is a slow burn style piece. It starts small with a relentless rhythmic and harmonic ostinato that builds and builds to a big band shout chorus. There is a trumpet solo indicated, but the solo could be played by any member of the band. There are optional parts for vibes and tuba. The work is not overly difficult and could be mastered by a high school band with little effort. Paramount to a good performance is articulation and dynamics. Also, the blending of muted brass with saxophones should be considered. There are no doublings. Leade Tpt C6 (D6 opt.)
