(A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). As jazz history books like Gunther Schuller’s tell us, Benny Goodman’s rendition of Jelly Roll Morton’s ‘King Porter Stomp’ in the arrangement of Fletcher Henderson ‘ushered in the Swing Era’. That this tune already had a long and venerable career was obvious to every jazz lover: starting with Morton’s own recording from 1923, it was revived on a regular basis by Fletcher Henderson for his orchestras of the ‘twenties and ‘thirties. He then adapted the tune for the Benny Goodman Orchestra, which made it a hit in 1935. And from that moment on, the tune stayed popular: in 1975 it was recorded by the Gil Evans Orchestra for the album ‘There Comes A Time’. But during the ‘twenties, Henderson picked up more ‘jazz and stomp’-tunes (as opposed to the Tin Pan Alley/Broadway fare) and had them arranged for his orchestra. One such example is a tune credited to pianist/bandleader/businessman Clarence Williams (although other sources state that it was actually written by Joseph Joe Jordan, one of the early ragtime ‘professors’). That is the composition ‘Hop Off’, a very swinging, hard-driving multi-strain tune. Henderson recorded it in 1927. However, unlike ‘King Porter Stomp’, Henderson never chose to ‘adapt’ this tune for his ‘thirties swing-style orchestra, and so it never became a part of the Goodman Orchestra’s band book. What if Henderson had done so, and in 1935 had handed over the tune to Goodman as an addition for his ‘Let’s Dance’-library? ‘Hop Off’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. Based on the 1927 Henderson arrangement, it juxtaposes the two main strains of the original composition for maximum variety. Plenty of breaks, stoptime-sections and other ‘hot’ stuff. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Solo’s for clarinet, tenor sax 1, tpt 2, trb 1 and a brief four-bar spot for the drummer at the end. If your band is able to play ‘King Porter Stomp’, this tune should cause no problems. The only exception is the presence of a solo clt part. The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’: fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. Must be able to be heard over a shouting ensemble chorus. If your band has such a player: have fun!

For the first time ever, due to popular demand, Youngblood Brass Band has released a specific big band/jazz ensemble arrangement of their tune 'Wrestlevania' (from the Pax Volumi album), by Zach Lucas, David Henzie-Skogen, and Nat McIntosh, arranged by band member Adam Meckler (who arranges and composes for his own big band as well as commissions all over the world). This is NOT an album transcription, it is written for full standard big band large instrumentation: 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 bass trombone, 2 alto sax, 2 tenor sax, 1 bari sax, bass, piano, guitar, and drumset.YBB members are also available for online lessons, commissions, bespoke arrangements, and custom studio work. This work was originally composed for choir by Bernadette Debattista and was first performed at the Dawn Service, commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, in ANZAC Cove on 25 April 2015 by a combined choir from St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows’ School. This extended work sees the original theme recomposed for big band and choir. It may be performed in its entirety or the third movement may be omitted (or presented as spoken word only) if a choir is not available. The sax section requires the following doubles: Clarinet for Alto Saxes 1 and 2, and Tenor Sax 2; Flute for Tenor Sax 1; Bassoon for Bari Sax (although a Bari Sax part with no doubles has been included). There is also an optional part for Eb Sarrusophone! Trumpets require Flugelhorns and Harmon mutes.The recording features excerpts from each of the four movements and a brief description of each follows.1. Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised. However, in this arrangement, cheekily translated as Let It Snow … But Quietly, the well-known melody in 6/8 time is presented in 4/4 time with a soul treatment. Other German Christmas tunes have also been worked into this medium-difficulty big band chart. Even those unfamiliar with the German originals will I hope be able to enjoy the holiday season spirit conveyed with the obligatory sleigh bells!Percussion is optional apart from the sleigh bells (which are cued in the Drums part).Solos are indicated in 1st Alto Saxophone, 1st Tenor Saxophone, 2nd Trumpet, 2nd Trombone, Guitar, and PianoAt the end of the piece, let the bass, piano, and guitar sounds simply decay until just the sleigh bells are left, as the player walks off stage. Only when the sleigh bells can no longer be heard is this piece over!
