Published by Mike Dana Music (A0.1472109). About the piece: Welcome to the second chart I’ve done on a Beatles tune! I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose. Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

A simple drone style bassline in unison from the Cello and Double bass provide a nice moody texture throughout the piece. The piano is the main feature of this piece, utilising a granular piano effect and a sample of locusts to give this piece a mysterious atmosphere with some familiarity.How to play:While this piece can work in a band setting, I feel that the piano player is the most active and will need some good friends who are ok playing very simple lines with little variation if they wish to play the other parts.I feel it's best to set this up for a solo performance with a little more effort and preparation. I think it's best to use a midi-controller keyboard with both a sustain pedal and expression pedal. I suggest programming the bass with a click track or metronome, the locusts and granular effect will need their volume to be assigned to the expression pedal so you can bring them in and out as needed. In regards to the piano loop, while I have provided a transcription of what I played in the track, you are free to use this as inspiration to create your own.Performance time - 3 minIf you happen to record or film this piece, feel free to tag #JLTStudio ... I had wanted to write such a chart for several years and I had the opportunity to do so in April 2019. The title refers to that al to familiar feeling of walking onto a sandy beach on a hot sunny day and your feet get a little bit burnt. (A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). As jazz history books like Gunther Schuller’s tell us, Benny Goodman’s rendition of Jelly Roll Morton’s ‘King Porter Stomp’ in the arrangement of Fletcher Henderson ‘ushered in the Swing Era’. That this tune already had a long and venerable career was obvious to every jazz lover: starting with Morton’s own recording from 1923, it was revived on a regular basis by Fletcher Henderson for his orchestras of the ‘twenties and ‘thirties. He then adapted the tune for the Benny Goodman Orchestra, which made it a hit in 1935. And from that moment on, the tune stayed popular: in 1975 it was recorded by the Gil Evans Orchestra for the album ‘There Comes A Time’. But during the ‘twenties, Henderson picked up more ‘jazz and stomp’-tunes (as opposed to the Tin Pan Alley/Broadway fare) and had them arranged for his orchestra. One such example is a tune credited to pianist/bandleader/businessman Clarence Williams (although other sources state that it was actually written by Joseph Joe Jordan, one of the early ragtime ‘professors’). That is the composition ‘Hop Off’, a very swinging, hard-driving multi-strain tune. Henderson recorded it in 1927. However, unlike ‘King Porter Stomp’, Henderson never chose to ‘adapt’ this tune for his ‘thirties swing-style orchestra, and so it never became a part of the Goodman Orchestra’s band book. What if Henderson had done so, and in 1935 had handed over the tune to Goodman as an addition for his ‘Let’s Dance’-library? ‘Hop Off’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. Based on the 1927 Henderson arrangement, it juxtaposes the two main strains of the original composition for maximum variety. Plenty of breaks, stoptime-sections and other ‘hot’ stuff. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Solo’s for clarinet, tenor sax 1, tpt 2, trb 1 and a brief four-bar spot for the drummer at the end. If your band is able to play ‘King Porter Stomp’, this tune should cause no problems. The only exception is the presence of a solo clt part. The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’: fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. Must be able to be heard over a shouting ensemble chorus. If your band has such a player: have fun!
