This chart has several unusual aspects, all set within this familiar format. The theme is stated by the trumpets, then, the saxes take a one-chorus interlude on a pentatonic figure. The first (and ONLY) soloist on the audio track is the tenor sax. BUT, the chart is designed to have the alto, tenor, bari, and finally All THREE saxes blowing their blues away at once! A similar treatment follows with the trumpets. Three blues choruses from the piano give the horns a break, and a SampleSolo is included for this instrument ONLY, due to the nature of the group improv that is structured into the piece. Then the trombones have their 12-bar interlude, and the lead trombone plays three more 12-bar sets, but just the one horn, as we've had enough group enthusiasm at this point! At the conclusion, the three interlude sections all come back, but simultaneously, as they have been designed to fit together. Then the final statement of the theme is played in hocket or stretto, whichever term you choose, with one voice starting and the other two choirs following behind. This chart can be played using only one soloist per section, or with the entire group solos, or anything in between, for that matter! If you have a blowing band, you'll want to show them off! Running time with a single soloist per section is 3 mins 45 secs. considerably longer with the multiple and group solos. MBB.

The piece is a Charlie Parker-Style blues with a modal bridge. After the theme, a short tutti leads to a series of solos with backgrounds for various saxes and brass, finishing with a full ensemble chorus out. The chart can be opened up for additional solos if desired. GateWay Editions Jazz Ensemble Series titles feature SampleSolos for most improvisational sections, so your band can learn to play the section material AND blow on changes at the same time. Each soloist's part is included without the sample as well, for the experienced player. All charts are straight through, with no D.S.'s back to the top or awkward pageturns. The trombone is an oft-neglected melody and solo instrument in the jazz ensemble, and here is a trombone section feature on the melody, with an improvised solo as well for the lead player. The saxes and trumpets also have soli sections, in harmony. The trombone melody is unison. Solo sections are broken up such that one player does the A-A, and another doe the B section and the final A. Sorry, no SampleSolo for the trumpet, but all others have one. The music is a riff on Am-Bb7, with a modal bridge that uses the parallel and relative majors of A minor. A nice little structural element! Rhythm section Uni-Part, Straight-through no D.S. al coda layout, and piano voicings and chord symbols make this as playable and clear for student, recreational, and pro ensembles. Ranges are conservative without being boring. Running time is approx. 4 mins 45 secs. MBB.

Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music.For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979665). Fanfare (for 4 or 5 wind instruments and rhythm section) was inspired by Brazilian brass bands. It was written for music students at the Sandy Spring Friends School in Maryland. This music has an exuberant spirit with samba rhythms churning under contemporary harmonic voicings. It is intended to be a short piece; however, the vamp at the end can be extended with a solo or collective improvisation. Another option is to have a percussion intro before the horn section enters with the opening chords. While Fanfare was draws upon Brazilian music, it is in my own style. Unlike my other pieces for mid-size ensemble, the rhythm section is optional for Fanfare. In this way, the piece can be performed by woodwind or brass quintets, clarinet ensemble, or sax quartet/quintet as several possibilities. Additionally, it can be easily adapted for big bands and larger ensembles by doubling players on parts so that each line has a distinctive blending of tone colors. Suggested assignment of parts for a big band: I -- 4 trumpets (open); II -- clarinet, soprano sax; III - alto sax, trombone (open); IV - tenor sax, trombone (cup), trombone (bucket); V - baritone sax, bass trombone (open). My energetic saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone),â€All In†is a jazz piece that was inspired by Jimmy Giuffre’s  “Four Brothers†and all of the other great big band arrangers.  From them I learned so much about writing for the saxophone quartet in particular block chording. Further I did not score it for 3 tenors (or 1 alto 2 tenors) and bari and did not use the chord changes to Jeepers Creepers. I did enjoy creating colorful counterpoint and harmonies and tried to keep it in a light style like the Four Brothers recording.  While I did not include any improvisation it could be added perhaps using the chords from Jeepers Creepers.  All of this should make for challenging but enjoyable playing.  Note: all parts and the score are transposed in one pdf file. trt: 2’ 24 “ this work is: copyright 2023davekenneymusic I would love to get comments from you.Be Well Dave Kenneydavekenneymusic@gmail.com

Also with my arrangements for my bands I have written out Rhythm section parts for those that find it difficult to read chords or improvise/comp which also brings it closer to the original recording. Jazz Ensemble. Latin and Swing, multi-meter. The Dizzy Gillespie classic features Trombone 1 playing the melody as a half-time ballad against Latin style rhythm accompaniment. After an optionally open solo section (in swing tempo), an ensemble soli (without rhythm section) leads to a jazz waltz by the lower voices. The final section features Alto Sax 1, Flugelhorn and Trombone 1 in an up-tempo recap of the melody. See Conductor score for an overview.
