Your soloists only need to know two scales to solo on this tune: C dorian minor and Ab mixolydian. Range and technical demands are moderate. After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. The song details a day's work for a sheep shearer in the days before machine shears. In June 2013 it was discovered that a version of the song was first published in 1891 in the regional Victorian newspaper the Bacchus Marsh Express under the title The Bare Belled Ewe and the tune given as Ring the Bell Watchman. That version was signed C. C. Eynesbury, Nov. 20, 1891,Eynesbury being a rural property located in the Bacchus Marsh area. It is possible that C.C. was the author of the song. .

Eastern Neck Island is a contemporary lullaby. Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge is a magical place in Maryland. Located at the mouth of the Chester River as it enters the Chesapeake Bay, Eastern Neck Island is a wintering habitat for thousands of waterfowl (including the tundra swan) that migrate each year to the Bay. During a visit to the island I experienced a sense of maternal protection extending over the woods and marshes. This feeling inspired me to write a lullaby. It was originally in a traditional style. However, I decided to take the music in a different direction. Cullen Smith wrote the original edition in less than an hour after seeing Snarky Puppy live at the Oklahoma City Tower Theater during the Summer of 2022. Cullen's first words after completing the first draft were That took a suspiciously short amount of time to write... and as a result Cullen came up with the name Suspicious Package because it just sounded cool and fitting with the attitude of the music he wrote.Later on, Cullen Smith would premier the Jazz combo version of Suspicious Package at the University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab in November of 2022. I wrote this shortly after a gig at a local place called Squirrel's where a young woman through a pickle from upstairs. She was aiming for her boyfriend but the rascal managed to avoid her attack, whereby the pickle continued its angry trajectory and hit me rather harmlessly in the shoulder. We were on a band break at the time. The pickle was a mystery. Who had thrown it? Or was it some sort of magical pickle? The mystery was resolved when the young lady heard the band was talking about the amazing pickle and tracked me down to apologize. No harm! And I was inspired to write this little ditty! .

There are parts for 5 saxophones (although the arrangement can be played with just 1 alto, 1 tenor, and baritone), 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, acoustic guitar, keyboard strings, electric bass, drum set, and finger cymbals. One of your redundant big band players could maybe be recruited to play the essential finger cymbals part. The arrangement requires some finger dexterity from your saxophone players, particularly the altos, but all those passages are doubled in the keyboard strings part. The keyboard part could serve as a basis for writing out your own string parts, which would be a wonderful opportunity to get your local string players involved.

Sky, the thirsty gambler, takes straight-laced Salvationist Sarah to Havana for a bet. They drink a local milkshake with sugar and a little native flavouringSarah: What's the name of the flavouring?Sky: Bacardi.Sarah: Doesn't Bacardi have alcohol in it?Sky: Oh, only enough to act as a preservative.Sarah: You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk!After a couple of those, she bursts into song. Doris Day had a Top-20 hit with If I Were a Bell in 1950 and many singers have covered it since. Its place as a Jazz Standard was cemented in 1956 on the album Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet.This original arrangement for big band features a solo flute - if not a flute solo - and, at 128 BPM, is slightly slower than usual. It was written in the mid-1990s for the Morley College Jazz Orchestra in London (then directed by Gordon BAP! Rose and Pete Pearl and Dean Moore). The style is in the direction of the understated West-Coast sound (Count Basie/Bill Russo/Bill Holman), with tipsy soli sections and a shout-chorus. The part for second alto OR first tenor is the same, meaning the flautist can be either an alto or tenor player. Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing.Hic!

The first idea to come to mind was the dissonant chord (m. 16, m. 24, m. 32, etc.) intended to emulate a dryer buzzer. From there, a story began to take shape.An attractive gentleman (tuba) approaches the counter at his local laundromat (m. 17), looking to have some of his clothes washed. Soon after, an attractive lady (oboe) approaches the counter along with the man (m. 23), and they notice each other. The mutual attraction is palpable, illustrated with arpeggios in triplets in the piano and vibes (m. 33). Their clothes washing questions are resolved, and they take their seats, nearby each other, of course. The small talk begins.Just then, some noisier patrons enter (brass), completing the laundering atmosphere. A high trumpet lick (m. 61) is the ever present obnoxious laughter that always seems to have an outburst at the most inopportune time. The following solo section (m. 66) is a lull in the superficial conversation of the lady and gentleman, where each is left to their own thoughts.Suddenly (m. 78), the conversation begins anew, with a more personal and profound interaction between them. All the while, the other launderers continue their carrying on. At measure 121, the man's dryer finishes, followed soon after by the woman's (m. 122), and the pair go their separate ways. Their story to be completed in the mind of the listener.
