Blues For Lester (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an extended piece with an eclectic blend of jazz, funk, contemporary classical, and blues. It is an expression of my admiration for Lester Young, the great tenor saxophonist, who had many quirky qualities in his music. This piece draws upon aspects of Lester Young's playing that I admire and have internalized: His horizontal approach to harmony, how he played around with time in his phrasing, used wrong notes (from a vertical chord perspective) at times, and had an audacious sense of humor. These are expressed in Blues For Lester in my own style. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. So What is the earliest and most excellent example of modal jazz, which is more based on scales than chords. The scales applied are D-Dorian and Eb-Dorian. This opens for the solo player to concentrate on the melodic direction rather than be guided by chords. Hence, the soloists in this arrangement should practice their improvisations in D-Dorian (Dm7) and Eb-Dorian (Ebm7). There is also a video of Charlie Davis performing it at a concert in London with Buddy’s band. It’s not an easy solo for the featured trumpet player but for those who haven the chops, I believe it will prove to be a real crowd pleaser. As with all of the new issues of the charts I’ve done for Buddy, I’ve added a 4th trombone part and have included a drum part. I’ve also written out a suggested bass part for ensembles that prefer to have that in the part. Electric bass is important to the overall sound of the piece but an amplified accoustic bass could suffice. Try to avoid the temptation to speed up the tempo and go with the suggested tempo markings.
