It is very pretty, not difficult but must be played as is to work. First chorus is solo, second chorus first half ensemble, bridge is trumpet solo in front of brass section, last 8 modulates up for a big finish. Appropriate for a working band or a good high school or college band. Dedicated to Randy Brooks. Solo part has more than eighth notes but tempo is slow.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

Chism, Sr. #852705. Published by Rodney D. Chism, Sr. (A0.1259418). The Plaza is a low 12/8 feel down-to-earth Mississippi Delta style blues. Great solo vehicle for a blues guitarist. A strong ensemble shout chorus that will bring down the house. It is very playable. Solos - Guitar, Tenor Saxophone, muted Trumpet/Flugelhorn (or just open it up). This composition was written for Nolan Ryan Henderson, a student murdered in Mississippi. It begins with a drum build-up and a strong beginning. Letter A is written for a Guitar solo to go to town. The Saxophone part will be played as background for the last time. Letters B and C are full band sections. Trumpets with shakes, Trombones with slide falls throughout, and a Saxophone Soli at letter C leading up to letter D, the open solo section.Letter D is the open solo section for any instrument let freedom ring. The ensemble backgrounds are to be played every even number of repeated cycles or the last time. Allow the Guitarist to close it out by going into the shout section of the letter E.Letter E is the famous riff until the next, the last measure with the railroad tracks. At the pause, allow the lead soloist or the drummer to work until the last note is cued. If the spirit is still high, the final note can be played with directed quarter note hits leading back to the 5th measure of letter E (shout section). Play it straight to the end with no railroad tracks during this time.

Here is a setting for a standard jazz ensemble with ONE main Idea: Let's NOT make this a guitar piece, but a Horn Piece. So, we have all the same structures as the original recording, right down to the time changes, and the shift from slow to fast and back again. The saxes are given the solo vocal line harmonized as a typical sax soli. The brass take Queen's vocal overdubs and operatic elements, and are given a jazz rather than a pop harmonic setting, with some extended and altered harmony, rather than just the triads and 7th chords of the Queen vocal. Sax ranges go to the top of the horn for lead alto, and go to a concert Ab just above the staff for the lead trpt. Trombone goes to a high Bb in the lead solo. First ending should appear at ms. 29 to the repeat. 2nd ending at ms. 35The guitar solos are given to either the piano, in octaves, or the brass, so that a guitar player is an option here, not a necessity. Revised version here, with ending placement errors all fixed up! This is NOT a jazz chart in the improvisational sense: it is a pop song set for a jazz ensemble. Our audio clip shows the opening trombone solo with the piano accomp, into the main vocal line harmonized with saxes. First bridge is alto 1 & 2 in unison...with solo alto out front and alto 2 in section it gets a nice echo effect--Last 8 back to alto 1 solo. First half of second chorus has a band within a band over background. Solo part has a few notes past an eighth.Last bridge trombones then alto solo last 8. Ending is very dramatic with some interesting alto work..the very last note is held over the band....like Harlem Nocturne. Not too fast.Don’t let the last note scare you, look at your fingering chart or play it 8va lower. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308790). *THIS ACCOMPANIES THE VOCAL ARRANGEMENT* This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.
