Beetlejuice is a 1988 American dark fantasy horror comedy film directed by Tim Burton and starring Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Michael Keaton as the title character. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning the Academy Award for Best Makeup. The film's success spawned an animated television series, video games and a 2018 stage musical; a sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, arrives in September 2024. Danny Elfman's score showcases his unique voice and foreshadows some of the darkness to come in his next score for 'Batman', but the original soundtrack also featured many calypso songs by Harry Belafonte to contrast with the B-movie horror stylings. Elfman's playfulness is on display in the distorted march of the main title theme and this arrangement for advanced ensembles features doublings on piccolo, clarinet and bass clarinet to give the extra colour needed.

With the arrangement of Wayne Shorter's Infant Eves, I officially start the series dedicated to the most typical orchestral ensemble in jazz: the Big Band.The instrumentation is the traditional one: 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section (guitar, piano, double bass and drums).After a brief introduction, in which the double bass moves freely over an orchestral accompaniment, the exposition of the initial part of theme A is entrusted to the first trombone, followed by the saxophone section and then the trumpet section (B).This all flows into the last section of the theme (C), in a robust brass ensemble to which the saxophones respond with simple counterpoint phrases.The last four bars, again entrusted to the saxophones, gradually lead us to the solo section.The latter is developed over a chorus and a half, and each of the soloists is given one of the four sections (A, B, C, A): the first is by the first trombone (the arrangement's main soloist), the second by the first alto saxophone, while the third features the orchestra in a short nine-bar special, where the three sections chase and chase each other.The final solo part is then entrusted to the second trumpet, which gives way to the orchestra for the reprise of the remaining two sections of the theme as well as the inevitable coda.Altogether, the arrangement spans three complete choruses, plus the introduction and coda, for a total duration of just under seven minutes.I hope you enjoy this arrangement and, as always, I wish youGood Music!!!am.

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955736). Heading Home is a new, easy swing number for junior big band. This was originally a song and so essentially has a verse-refrain form. All the sections have something to do and there are short solos for the lead players. A tempo range is suggested so that bands with different abilities will be able to attempt this piece.Following the intro, which uses the refrain, the main theme is stated by unison saxes. The brass enter in the continuation of the main theme, with the saxes now in harmony. Unison trumpets then play the refrain and that is followed by the first solo section, which is cued in the lead alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone parts as well as the optional flute. A solo is suggested but the chords are included so that players can try out their own ideas. This section is followed by a brief bridge passage played by the trombones and lower saxes. After that we hear the second part of the main theme again, which is followed by unison trumpets playing the refrain and another short solo section. At the change of key, the trombones and lower saxes take over the main theme at first. Following the final refrain, the outro with its walking bass, cross-stick now added to the rhythm, and syncopated accompaniment beneath a sax or flute solo ensures that this piece really is heading home, although it concludes on a quiet note.The actual notes of these charts are easy, but this piece still demands full concentration and that tight playing so crucial to the big band sound. Unison passages will test intonation. For players new to swing, I hope it will help them to become familiar with this style of music.

Here is a setting for a standard jazz ensemble with ONE main Idea: Let's NOT make this a guitar piece, but a Horn Piece. So, we have all the same structures as the original recording, right down to the time changes, and the shift from slow to fast and back again. The saxes are given the solo vocal line harmonized as a typical sax soli. The brass take Queen's vocal overdubs and operatic elements, and are given a jazz rather than a pop harmonic setting, with some extended and altered harmony, rather than just the triads and 7th chords of the Queen vocal. Sax ranges go to the top of the horn for lead alto, and go to a concert Ab just above the staff for the lead trpt. Trombone goes to a high Bb in the lead solo. First ending should appear at ms. 29 to the repeat. 2nd ending at ms. 35The guitar solos are given to either the piano, in octaves, or the brass, so that a guitar player is an option here, not a necessity. Revised version here, with ending placement errors all fixed up! This is NOT a jazz chart in the improvisational sense: it is a pop song set for a jazz ensemble. Our audio clip shows the opening trombone solo with the piano accomp, into the main vocal line harmonized with saxes. This is a funky straight up blues tune that I've had for a while. Built around a steady, mechanical riff laid out in the bass guitar and guitar, this work features plenty of soli playing throughout the different sections. The smeary main theme, introduced by alto and bari sax in unison, is later picked up by the rest of the section as well as the trumpets in the playout at the end. The saxophones in particular are strongly encouraged to make the most out of the bends, scoops and dips as indicated. There is an open solo chorus for a guitar solo. This tune has gone by many names in my mind over the years (Texas Trout, Rudie-Nudie Blues, I Think Your Dog Has Worms), but have at last settled on Blues Against The Machine for the main title, as I think this captures the contrast between the bluesy melody with the machine-like riff.

The ensemble enters with a stronger statement that builds to the head.The guitar plays the A section of the head in octave or single notes. The bridges section swings as a single eighth note guitar line. The background starts with the sax section followed with counterpoint between the trumpet and trombone sections.The second time through the form, Tenor Sax 1 solos over the first half changes and background. The guitar takes over solo on the last half of the form which leads into an echo of the intro and builds up to the shout chorus.The shout builds to a melodic trumpet high D followed by an obvious quotation by the ensemble. Repetition of the ensemble intro with a main theme fragment is followed by brass pyramids and a final theme stinger to close out the piece. 160 bpm per quarter note is a suggested tempo but the piece can be taken faster for more excitement and energy. The piece is written in 4/4 for the swing bridge section. The samba sections should be felt in 2/2 with the accent on the 2. The quarter note always stays the same.
