Published by Kurt Schulenburg (A0.505160). This is a Big Band 12 Bar Blues in C (with a few alternate chords) with an 8 bar bridge. The 8 bar intro has a few stops and starts that feature each section of the band (Might be good as an Introducing the Band sort of piece!) and the head begins at A with an Alto/Trumpet/Trombone lead line. The full band joins in at the bridge and brings us to the solo section with changes written in Tenor 1 and Trombone 2. At G, the rhythm drops out, leaving the band to build to a re-iteration of the head and on out. This is a Grade 2-3 with Trumpet top note of Bb. Musescore was used for the mp3 - so large grain of salt on the audio!

It's a simple blues in Concert F (despite the key signature where I've added that flatted seventh!) and is a great vehicle for developing young soloists - or pushing those with more experience to new highs! The mp3 is just a MuseScore3 export, nothing fancy, but it gives you an idea of what to expect. I've not included any solos, making this a good mp3 to give to your soloists to play along with. It's not too tough, should be playable by many advanced grade school and all high school bands - and it's scored to sound good even with pro groups.

The song has become covered by later artists, most notably Amii Stewart in 1979. Stewart's disco version was the most successful on weekly music charts.Eddie Floyd's recording peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent one week at number 1 on the Soul Singles chart. The song was written in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee (now The National Civil Rights Museum). Steve Cropper has stated in interviews that there was a lightning storm the night that he and Eddie wrote the song, hence the lyrics 'It's like thunder, lightning, The way you love me is frightening'. Floyd's version earned a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on July 17, 1995 weekly music charts. Performance time: approx. 3 minutes.
