When you think of jazz bands, who doesn't think of Franz Schubert [1797-1828]. Normal people, right? When listening to both his Trout Quintet and his Lied named The Trout, I thought if Schubert can use this melody multiple times, would it also work as the basis of a jazz band chart? This is the result: am up tempo swing chart that is both fun and playable. The chart overall is Grade 2 with solos a grade harder for Alto, Trumpet, Trombone, and Piano which, of course, can be altered to match the level of your players.

Here is a setting for a standard jazz ensemble with ONE main Idea: Let's NOT make this a guitar piece, but a Horn Piece. So, we have all the same structures as the original recording, right down to the time changes, and the shift from slow to fast and back again. The saxes are given the solo vocal line harmonized as a typical sax soli. The brass take Queen's vocal overdubs and operatic elements, and are given a jazz rather than a pop harmonic setting, with some extended and altered harmony, rather than just the triads and 7th chords of the Queen vocal. Sax ranges go to the top of the horn for lead alto, and go to a concert Ab just above the staff for the lead trpt. Trombone goes to a high Bb in the lead solo. First ending should appear at ms. 29 to the repeat. 2nd ending at ms. 35The guitar solos are given to either the piano, in octaves, or the brass, so that a guitar player is an option here, not a necessity. Revised version here, with ending placement errors all fixed up! This is NOT a jazz chart in the improvisational sense: it is a pop song set for a jazz ensemble. Our audio clip shows the opening trombone solo with the piano accomp, into the main vocal line harmonized with saxes. The score precedes the parts in the PDF file, with coverpage and a blank page, so print double-sided until pg. 27. Parts begin at pg. 28 and should be printed single-sided. MBB

Despite the subtitle, this piece is not a samba, but rather a soulful solo vehicle for Grover and members of the rhythm section.This arrangement is written flexibly so that it could be performed by a full big band, by solo alto sax with rhythm section, or by big band with a featured alto soloist. The arrangement can be opened up for multiple soloists. Young soloists can improvise very effectively using a g minor blues scale, although the piece is not a blues. So What is the earliest and most excellent example of modal jazz, which is more based on scales than chords. The scales applied are D-Dorian and Eb-Dorian. This opens for the solo player to concentrate on the melodic direction rather than be guided by chords. Hence, the soloists in this arrangement should practice their improvisations in D-Dorian (Dm7) and Eb-Dorian (Ebm7). The arrangement would be useful for amateurs, student big bands and even professional big bands with a Miles Davis project on the repertoire.

Show Type Tune Back in 1989 I was taking an arranging course at NEC taught by George Russell (who subsequently received the Genius Grant for Lifetime Achievement). I worked on this big band arrangement for about a year. My concept was to take a Bill Evans tune and harmonize his solo for saxes within the body of the arrangement. About a week before graduation it finally came time for the class to have their work heard. I was SO excited! A big band was assembled and after a few days of classmate’s charts workshopped, George Russell fell ill, and I never got to hear my arrangement. I was devastated. It had taken me months to arrange, and hand-write the 17 parts as back then, no computers of course!So, tearfully it all went into a red folder—and eventually made its way to the bottom of a box, a box that somehow followed me throughout life. Recently concerned about doing nothing all week at family camp—I thought to myself, with my present knowledge of music notation software, why not dig up that dusty red folder and input the chart to finally hear it —32 years later? I figured if the work had any merit I could print it out and bring it to Library Band ! So. in the tiny log cabin with laptop and travel keys, I began, soon falling into what can only be described as timeless awareness—future self collaborating with inner conservatory undergrad—and dare say, I was rather impressed with her 😂 Although a few tweaks needed, the work proved nothing short of a sound effort. Tying up this life-long loose-end feels nothing short of spiritually inspired. ðŸ˜.

Parts for C Flute and Tuba are scored to add those unique timbres to the ensemble sound.Rather than feature a single instrument, the melody is purposely distributed throughout the ensemble. However, the musical focal point of the piece is intended to be the featured improvisation solo space provided for Bb Tenor Saxophone 1. Since each improvisation is original and unique, the music should retain a newness with each performance. A theory sheet is also provided for less experienced improvisers to enhance soloist creativity within the intended harmonic context.Scored for groups performing at the medium level (grade 2.5 - 3.0), the unique chord progression provides the soloist with myriad possibilities from which to construct improvisational melodies. Improvisation is a key element of jazz music. Thus, this improvised solo will also inherently impact the level and quality of the entire sound of each ensemble performance.Brass ranges are purposely kept very reasonable. Piano part includes through-composed material along with written chord voicings. Bass & Drum Set Guide share the same part in an effort to encourage the two players to interact rhythmically to enhance the jazz-rock groove feel of the piece. Mockup available.ABOUT THE COMPOSERChristopher Burnett (b. 1955) is a critically acclaimed alto saxophonist, educator, leader, and composer who began his professional career with military jazz bands going pro directly upon graduating high school at 18 years old. Over the course of a forty plus year career, Mr. Burnett has performed professionally around the world, recorded noteworthy albums as a leader, taught at the college-level and co-founded a significant independent recording label, Artists Recording Collective. A writer-affiliate and composer since 1984, Mr. Burnett has over 60 registered works in his Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) catalog. He is also the 1995 Parade of American Music 5-Star Award of Merit Winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs as a Composer. Mostly That is a lead sheet written in RealBook style, which can be played in many settings by a soloist or other jazz combo. It has a 24 bar form, fusion feel and sounds great with a strong back-beat behind its 3/4 time. I chose the key of E Major so that the 6 string guitar could utilize the lowest of its open strings tuned to standard tuning. It really opens up the fret-board. The chord-changes and melody break away from the key slightly at times, to create some dissonance and fluctuation. The solos section evokes blues and a bit of grit with the use of the dominant #9 and flat9. Play the solos with intention and vigor. The title was inspired by a brief conversation I had with a stranger in New York City. I was asked a rather broad question and didn't have a response so I said, Mostly That.
