A mysterious, exciting, and magical journey from a desolate earth to a dying star, this is Nebula. I wrote this piece in January 2023 for the Essentially Ellington Composition Contest, and five sets of revisions later I believe it is fully polished! The story I imagine first depicts a withering man stumbling through a dystopian landscape, but one that is filled with hope when looking to the stars. Then it transitions to a young kid traveling through space, and eventually they arrive at the star. They are first astounded by its presence, but then can't help but sit in the silence that surrounds them. However, in these moments of reflection, the star suddenly explodes, forming a Nebula.

Benches were used as makeshift desks or exchange counters during the Renaissance by Florentine bankers, who used to make their transactions atop desks covered by green tablecloths.This version is for a traditional big band line-up, with a funky guitar part and with a Fender Rhodes, in straight eigths instead of the usual (boring) jazz swing feel.And don't miss the free role for the double bass (if possible play with Scott LaFaro in mind).Garritan samples for the horns, Band in a Box for the rhythm section.

In the sax section, the Soprano sax (lead) is played by Alto sax 1 but an identical Alto Sax 1 part is available. Rich and warm voicings, interesting modal colors and melodic lines. ON THE BUS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2001 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is one of the first pieces I composed and arranged for big band and is based on the chord changes of Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite. I composed the tune in the late 1980's when, as a student, I was listening to a lot of Bird and Miles and spending a lot of time catching buses! The original arrangement was done for the Queensland Youth Big Band and has been somewhat revised for this version. The head features an Alto Sax 1/Trumpet 2 soli supported with some rhythmic and melodic stabs from the ensemble. Space is provided in the chart for solos from Alto Sax1, Trumpet 2 and Piano. The chorus beginning at measure 75 features a brass section unison soli passage, composed of some of my favourite Bird and Miles licks. This provides a challenge for the brass players to keep this section tight and swinging. Fully notated rhythm section parts have been included to assist less experienced players. Published by Amaya Rose (A0.1208591). The monotypic jellyfish species Stygiomedusa Gigantea is a rare deep-sea creature known for its massive size and elusive character. Written in 2022 and revised in 2023, Stygio was the first composition I had written for an ensemble. Like the Stygiomedusa, composing this piece was a rare, mystical, exciting experience as a young artist. The tune has a funk groove with swung sixteenths, and has been considered a standard for its form and chord progressions. The piece begins with a clear melody, shifts to a chorale featuring the melody of my alma mater at Christopher Newport University, then ends in a layered lava-lamp-esque collection of colors. Stygio offers improvisatory exploration and complex chord qualities over simple rhythms and an easy, pocketed feel.

Here is a setting for a standard jazz ensemble with ONE main Idea: Let's NOT make this a guitar piece, but a Horn Piece. So, we have all the same structures as the original recording, right down to the time changes, and the shift from slow to fast and back again. The saxes are given the solo vocal line harmonized as a typical sax soli. The brass take Queen's vocal overdubs and operatic elements, and are given a jazz rather than a pop harmonic setting, with some extended and altered harmony, rather than just the triads and 7th chords of the Queen vocal. Sax ranges go to the top of the horn for lead alto, and go to a concert Ab just above the staff for the lead trpt. Trombone goes to a high Bb in the lead solo. First ending should appear at ms. 29 to the repeat. 2nd ending at ms. 35The guitar solos are given to either the piano, in octaves, or the brass, so that a guitar player is an option here, not a necessity. Revised version here, with ending placement errors all fixed up! This is NOT a jazz chart in the improvisational sense: it is a pop song set for a jazz ensemble. Our audio clip shows the opening trombone solo with the piano accomp, into the main vocal line harmonized with saxes.
