By Joe Procopio These arrangements by Joe Procopio from J.S. Bach’s Flute/Violin Sonata II in Eb are special in many ways. Firstly, it fills the need for the very best in music combining the genres of both Classical and Jazz. In addition, it is also importantly unique because it may be performed by a variety of musicians. For example, the arrangement in C may be performed by 2 or more C Instruments including Flute, Piccolo, Oboe and Violin with a small band accompaniment (Piano, Guitar, Bass, and Drums - Guitar is optional). The work may also be performed with just the Piano and/or Guitar for accompaniment. What’s more, the Rhythm Track Accompaniment is available without the solo instruments adding to the already many attributes of this music that enhance its inherent genuine global appeal. This is critical because teachers, students and musicians worldwide are constantly seeking music of the highest quality that can be skillfully presented to the public while having, at the same time, built-in qualities both pleasing to the listener and the performer alike. Bach’s melodies have certainly stood the test of time and Jazz is without question internationally popular. That makes these arrangements truly worthy of attention from people, artists and publishers throughout the world. The composer personally has had great success with this work in many major concerts including its premier performance using a Flute Choir at a Civic Center Concert held in Syracuse, NY before several thousand people who triumphed the young musicians with a standing ovation. The melody by J.S. Bach used in this work is taken from the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe Band 9 and 1 Kammermusik BWV 1031- known as the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach which was published in 46 volumes from 1851-1899. A single volume was issued in 1926. The last surviving editor of the series died in 1928, and these volumes are now public domain worldwide. They are also held in acclaim because there are no articulation or expression marks in the Gesellshaft. Therefore, the articulation and expression marks written in these arrangements by the arranger are suggestions only. Musicians may perform the works in any manner best suited to the betterment of their own performance.

Includes a full score and complete set of parts.Reet Petite (The Sweetest Girl in Town) (originally subtitled The Finest Girl You Ever Want to Meet) is a song made popular by Jackie Wilson. It was his first solo hit after leaving the Dominoes and, over the years, has become one of his biggest international chart successes.The song was written by Berry Gordy, Gwen Gordy Fuqua, and Wilson's cousin Roquel Billy Davis (though credited under his pseudonym Tyran Carlo on the record) and produced by Dick Jacobs, and its title was taken from the Louis Jordan song Reet, Petite and Gone. It was Jackie Wilson's first recording as a solo artist. The song peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1957 and reached #6 on the UK Singles Chart. With the success of the song, Gordy was able to fund the launch of Motown Records. The song was reissued in 1986 following the showing of a clay animation video on the BBC Two documentary series Arena. The video was directed by Giblets, a London-based animation studio. (A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). What if Benny Carter had not sailed for Europe in 1935 to become staff arranger with the BBC, but instead had helped out Benny Goodman with providing scores for his ‘Let’s Dance’ program? And suppose Carter had done the same trick that Fletcher Henderson pulled later on, e.g. adapting already existing scores of his own band for the Benny Goodman Orchestra? Carter’s ‘Symphony In Riffs’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. The sax soli written by Carter is there, but the clarinet dominates the second strain in a Glenn Miller-styled section, and of course later with an extended solo. Other soloists include trb 1, piano, tpt 2 and ts 1. The two different strains are juxtaposed to each other, to make for a maximum of variety. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Difficult for multiple reasons: • The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’. Fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. • Strong lead-alto required, with an old-skool ‘singing’ tone. • Lead trumpet must be able to ‘carry off’ the final section from bar 197 onwards. • Driving rhythm section needed; swinging (preferably acoustic) rhythm guitarist and a bassist who doesn’t shy away from playing compelling bass-lines. If your band meets these requirements: have fun!

This piece is part of a series of tango-jazz compositions. Each one explores a particular quality of the tango. Number 6 is about dancers becoming attuned to one another. Unlike my other tangos, New Tango No. 6 is entirely in free-time. The melody floats over the background with a fluid movement. This piece expresses an open approach to my music: anything can be tried with it. Using free-time in this way, the melody player(s) and the background players need to be in visual communication with one another on when to make the harmonic changes. In effect, the process of performing this piece is an expression of its title. Published by John Philips Music Service (A0.947280). This is a funky 2 beat built on double (24 bar) blues. It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose. Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.
