UPC: 038081331911.Jeep's Blues is one of many blues lines written by Ellington's star alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges. This one was for an Ellington small group recording under Hodges' name in the late 1930's. It's basically just the first 4 bars of the blues and then Hodges improvises the rest of the 12-bar form. Ellington's later big band arrangement is a very simple enlargement of that original 4-horn chart. There are 2 ensemble choruses, 2 solo choruses, 2 sax section choruses ending with a stride piano cadence. The opening is a loud and glorious ensemble; the closing is a soft and introspective sax section.

I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.

It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) is a 1931 Duke Ellington composition now accepted as a jazz standard. The music was written and arranged by Ellington in August 1931 during intermissions at Chicago's Lincoln Tavern and was first recorded by Ellington and his orchestra on February 2, 1932. The song became famous, Ellington wrote, as the expression of a sentiment which prevailed among jazz musicians at the time. Probably the first song to use the phrase swing in the title, it introduced the term into everyday language and presaged the swing era by three years. The Ellington band played the song continually over the years and recorded it numerous times, most often with trumpeter Ray Nance as vocalist.

Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in lead sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. (NOTE: A Bb leadsheet is also available.) The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music.For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight.
