This hard swinging, up tempo arrangement is written in the style of the Count Basie Orchestra.  It starts out small with a Piano solo and builds throughout with additional solos in the Trumpet, Tenor Sax, and Trombone. ON THE BUS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2001 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is one of the first pieces I composed and arranged for big band and is based on the chord changes of Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite. I composed the tune in the late 1980's when, as a student, I was listening to a lot of Bird and Miles and spending a lot of time catching buses! The original arrangement was done for the Queensland Youth Big Band and has been somewhat revised for this version. The head features an Alto Sax 1/Trumpet 2 soli supported with some rhythmic and melodic stabs from the ensemble. Space is provided in the chart for solos from Alto Sax1, Trumpet 2 and Piano. The chorus beginning at measure 75 features a brass section unison soli passage, composed of some of my favourite Bird and Miles licks. This provides a challenge for the brass players to keep this section tight and swinging. Fully notated rhythm section parts have been included to assist less experienced players. I hope you enjoy performing this chart!

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955736). Heading Home is a new, easy swing number for junior big band. This was originally a song and so essentially has a verse-refrain form. All the sections have something to do and there are short solos for the lead players. A tempo range is suggested so that bands with different abilities will be able to attempt this piece.Following the intro, which uses the refrain, the main theme is stated by unison saxes. The brass enter in the continuation of the main theme, with the saxes now in harmony. Unison trumpets then play the refrain and that is followed by the first solo section, which is cued in the lead alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone parts as well as the optional flute. A solo is suggested but the chords are included so that players can try out their own ideas. This section is followed by a brief bridge passage played by the trombones and lower saxes. After that we hear the second part of the main theme again, which is followed by unison trumpets playing the refrain and another short solo section. At the change of key, the trombones and lower saxes take over the main theme at first. Following the final refrain, the outro with its walking bass, cross-stick now added to the rhythm, and syncopated accompaniment beneath a sax or flute solo ensures that this piece really is heading home, although it concludes on a quiet note.The actual notes of these charts are easy, but this piece still demands full concentration and that tight playing so crucial to the big band sound. Unison passages will test intonation. For players new to swing, I hope it will help them to become familiar with this style of music.

It is based on Monk Changes, although not exactly the same (remembering: Well you Needn´t). It has some tempo changes and some ensemble passages. The changes are fun to blow over.

The piece opens with a strong rhythmic figure played by the entire band based on quartal harmony. Then the main melody enters in a soli passage for the saxes. Ist trumpet must be able to hit a Bb above the staff on this one. Room for solos is provided. It would make a great addition to any program. After teaching music in the PA public schools for over thirty years I found that there were never enough good quality, accessible arrangements available. Hopefully this piece will help remedy that situation. This is an original arrangement for a jazz/swing band with standard instrumentation (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section).See all of my arrangements here

Even if the individual parts give the impression of a simple arrangement at first glance, one should not underestimate the sometimes challenging tuning due to the more complex chord progressions and their clusters. In addition, each individual player has to master her/his sheet quite soft (mp) throughout the entire piece - with the exception of a short passage. If these elementary details are observed, this nice tune is a treat for the audience as well for each player.

It's been designed to be played by large or small instrumental ensembles. It uses swing eighth note rhythms and incorporates most of the usual instruments of a concert band or orchestra, or jazz ensemble. Lyrics are not included, however it retains all six verses as it goes through key changes and a D.S. al Coda. Thus the lyrics from a hymn book could be used to sing all six verses. The first verse is a slow chorale style passage. Then it goes to fast tempo jazz style, much like a New Orleans style derge, or funeral march. The piece is 2:45 minutes in length, but could be shortened, by about 50 seconds, by playing straight through without taking the D.S. al Coda. It would also make an impressive half time show piece for marching band. A performance/play along track is available separately - see item number S0.873189.

The arrangement requires some finger dexterity from your saxophone players, particularly the altos, but all those passages are doubled in the keyboard strings part. The keyboard part could serve as a basis for writing out your own string parts, which would be a wonderful opportunity to get your local string players involved.

Blues for Elisa is a show tune that will work good as an opener or Encore. The form is irregular starting with the constant F minor swing that is interrupted almost randomly by the Bb7+11 bridge. The rhythm section must stay on it´s toes to make the changes at the right time. Each of the solos is of varying lengths making for alot of surprises (for the audience…not the band hopefully). There are ensemble passages and a 5 sax soli making it a challenging, but highly effective chart!Solos – Guitar, Alto 2, Trumpet 3 and Trombone 3.
