Such was born this unique version of this piece, with screaming trumpet parts, but a trombone soloing the first verse and then taking an extended improvisional solo throughout the middle (because as the lead trombone player of the band, I opted to give it to myself). I, personally, like this version better than the one that mimics the original, and give a little Bond pep to the midst to your setlist. Show Type Tune Back in 1989 I was taking an arranging course at NEC taught by George Russell (who subsequently received the Genius Grant for Lifetime Achievement). I worked on this big band arrangement for about a year. My concept was to take a Bill Evans tune and harmonize his solo for saxes within the body of the arrangement. About a week before graduation it finally came time for the class to have their work heard. I was SO excited! A big band was assembled and after a few days of classmate’s charts workshopped, George Russell fell ill, and I never got to hear my arrangement. I was devastated. I figured if the work had any merit I could print it out and bring it to Library Band ! So. in the tiny log cabin with laptop and travel keys, I began, soon falling into what can only be described as timeless awareness—future self collaborating with inner conservatory undergrad—and dare say, I was rather impressed with her 😂 Although a few tweaks needed, the work proved nothing short of a sound effort. Not So Quiet Please is one of five transcription/Arrangements (Carioca, Hawaiian War Chant, Well Git IT, Oop Bop Sh' Bam) I did for the Buddy Rich Retrospective at the Kool Jazz festival in 1982. After transcribing the originals I updated & re-arranged them to Buddy's liking without obscuring the intent of the originals. This arrangement is a composite of two recordings Buddy did of Quiet with Tommy Dorsey. The solo trumpet (first time at M. 9) can be played with all four trumpets both times if you choose and certain sections can be altered to suit your performance. We agreed on adding the eight bar shout after the drum solo to make the ending a little less anticlimactic. If you prefer, you can jump to M. 85 after the drum solo like the original. The drummer can stay on the toms and bass drum for the entire piece or alternate with a regular ride/hi hat swing pattern.

The saxophone section needs flute, clarinet and bass clarinet, with only one alto and one tenor sax. The solo trumpet part is quite easy, spanning one octave; f-f'. The written-out jazz solo is not as difficult as it looks but nevertheless a bit more challenging. An easier solo can be written or improvised to be as difficult as the player dares, or given to someone else. The level is on the easier side of intermediate. Kids' Song was written in the mid- 1990s, apparently after listening to a lot of Isaac Hayes as an antidote to the then-ubiquitous Britpop and EDM. The style is a bit commercial and unashamedly schmaltzy - as you might find in a Broadway show from the time. The harmonies are like recently-poured cornflakes; slushy but slightly crunchy in places - and there's a funky middle section, as if you've mashed in a banana with maple syrup and Tabasco on it or something. Kids' Song was conceived as part of the obscure musical about the fortunes of a banjo-playing flapper from Burnley, Fifi Braithwaite, but dropped for stylistic reasons because the show was set in the late 1920s/ early 1930s. The sentiment is We're hungry. Why can't adults just be nice?.

This arrangement captures the spirit of that recording and observes the original key of both recordings. This is an advanced level arrangement where solid high brass ranges are needed. The opening piano part is faithful to the original Guaraldi version, then opens up into latin-flavored open solos section where Trumpet and Trombone soloists can stretch out for a little while. The rhythm section parts are all fully notated other than the solo section, where the initial 2-chord changes of the groove is written out and can be directly repeated thereafter. There is an open vamp after the trombone solo to allow for an extended percussion feature, yet this can be cut and move directly into the ending instead. A great way to add this holiday standard onto your program!

After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.

The first idea to come to mind was the dissonant chord (m. 16, m. 24, m. 32, etc.) intended to emulate a dryer buzzer. From there, a story began to take shape.An attractive gentleman (tuba) approaches the counter at his local laundromat (m. 17), looking to have some of his clothes washed. Soon after, an attractive lady (oboe) approaches the counter along with the man (m. 23), and they notice each other. The mutual attraction is palpable, illustrated with arpeggios in triplets in the piano and vibes (m. 33). Their clothes washing questions are resolved, and they take their seats, nearby each other, of course. The small talk begins.Just then, some noisier patrons enter (brass), completing the laundering atmosphere. A high trumpet lick (m. 61) is the ever present obnoxious laughter that always seems to have an outburst at the most inopportune time. The following solo section (m. 66) is a lull in the superficial conversation of the lady and gentleman, where each is left to their own thoughts.Suddenly (m. 78), the conversation begins anew, with a more personal and profound interaction between them. All the while, the other launderers continue their carrying on. At measure 121, the man's dryer finishes, followed soon after by the woman's (m. 122), and the pair go their separate ways. Their story to be completed in the mind of the listener.

It became a standard song among jazz musicians, especially after Miles Davis recorded it. There is a wonderful version recorded by saxophonist Cannonball Adderly on his 1955 album “Cannonball Adderly With Strings”. PERFORMANCE NOTESSurrey With the Fringe on Top is a 32-bar AABA form in the key of concert B flat. In this arrangement, the A-section melody features several tongue-in-cheek grand pause moments. These are indicated by fermatas over quarter note rests. Have fun with these spots, varying the length of time you pause, which can done with a comical effect. The solo section at bar 37 is open to any player, and a set of notes is provided for improvisation. The backgrounds at 41 are to be played each time, and the solo section can be repeated as necessary for additional solos. The shout chorus at bar 47 should be played at full volume. Be sure to investigate and balance the chords among the wind instruments. The shout chorus winds down with a call and response between the brass and saxes.I hope you have fun with this classic tune!

I wrote this shortly after a gig at a local place called Squirrel's where a young woman through a pickle from upstairs. She was aiming for her boyfriend but the rascal managed to avoid her attack, whereby the pickle continued its angry trajectory and hit me rather harmlessly in the shoulder. We were on a band break at the time. The pickle was a mystery. Who had thrown it? Or was it some sort of magical pickle? The mystery was resolved when the young lady heard the band was talking about the amazing pickle and tracked me down to apologize. No harm! And I was inspired to write this little ditty! .
