Denin Slage-Koch #157043. Published by Denin Slage-Koch (A0.547149). A moving, expressive ballad with folklike qualities for big band, featuring trombone. Written as a tone poem honoring the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the piece also has moments for piano, 1st alto, and guitar. The piece starts softly, with piano and first alto playing in duet as the rest of the band slowly enters. As the trombone states the theme and then improvises, the piece crescendos into a massive, Kenton-esque release before winding back down towards an unresolved, tense, final chord, reminding listeners that the threat of war still looms over humanity.

Composed in the 1970s around the time of the American bicentennial celebration, the title also refers to meter changes between 7/4 (written as 4/4+3/4) and 6/4. Your soloists only need to know two scales to solo on this tune: C dorian minor and Ab mixolydian. Range and technical demands are moderate. After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus.
