After a maestoso rendition of the first verse by the brass section, the drums set up the tempo into a tour de force medium fast tempo tune influenced by Duke Jordan's Jordu (recorded by the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet) & Bobby Timmons's Moanin' (recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) that while retaining much of the original tune (verse, refrain & bridge) brings out a distinctive hard bop-influenced twist coupled with solos by tenor sax & drums as well as a powerful soli by the trumpet section and a shout chorus moment by the full band. This chart is perfect as a concert opener, anchorer or closer, and it's another good twist of the saying something old, something new in a refreshing way. It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose. Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. Before computers could imitate an orchestra well, I bought in Salvador many Brazilian instruments and carted them back home. This piece for jazz orchestra was the beginning of my personal renaissance as a composer, and here it is, all shiny and new and revised. The piece begins with a fast Samba, slows to mysterious calls of the rainforest, travels through Rio's bossa nova and ends with a bang. The text, however, captures a balance between solemnity and celebration, suffering and mercy, death and new life. In adapting it for jazz big band, I found myself thinking about New Orleans jazz funeral parades, which also feature that same odd contradiction between grief and joy, through the use of the blues. I won't claim this is in any way authentic New Orleans jazz, but it does try to say some of the same things, and I hope you enjoy it. Written for standard jazz big band, with lots of room for open solos by the blues-inclined. Roughly 6 minutes, longer with additional solos.
